– Project of the Week

– Our project of the week is the Auckland International Airport Novotel Hotel Green Wall built in 2011, in Auckland, New Zealand. Their website describes the Square Restaurant & Bar, where the green wall is located, as bringing “together exquisite cuisine, fine design and impeccable service with an unmistakably New Zealand sense of hospitality.” It is open 24 hours a day, and features “a stunning “˜living wall,’ [it is] the perfect place to relax with friends or colleagues. Enjoy an extensive selection of New Zealand wines and beers, artfully mixed cocktails and gourmet snacks as you soak up the relaxing atmosphere.”

The green wall has an array of native New Zealand flora, including cascading ferns and pan-pacific creepers. Completed last year, the two-story green wall was designed, built and installed by Natural Habitats, and is nurtured by a hydroponic system. It improves the indoor air quality by removing air pollutants and raising humidity levels, and it provides visual interest and environmental benefits, creating a more comfortable and relaxing work environment. The Auckland International Airport’s Novotel Hotel was awarded silver in the Spatial Design category at the 2011 Best Awards.

– Novia D. Rulistia of the Jakarta Post, says “Vertical gardens take root and flourish in green zone.” The Indonesia Greenwall office is one of several buildings and houses in Jakarta that utilizes green walls. Decky Rinawan of Indonesia Greenwall says, “the building itself has become a showroom for what vertical gardening can achieve. It shows everyone who is interested in helping make the city greener what can be done with technology and imagination.”

Last year the building underwent a makeover so it could feature the hanging garden of Harmoni and now features 339 square meters of vertical gardening.

– Ryan Gilbert of the Hartford Courant, talks about “Science Center’s Garden In Full Bloom With Flora And Grasshoppers.” The Connecticut Science Center opened its rooftop garden in May, and has become a popular attraction for both children and adults alike to enjoy native plants, views of downtown Hartford, the Connecticut River and the nearby countryside.

The 6,316-square-foot rooftop garden has several micro climates including a shade garden, an alpine garden and a children’s sensory garden. Some of the foliage include: blueberry bushes, strawberry plants, canna lilies, prickly pear cactus, various herbs and milkweeds. The Science Center is LEED-Gold certified and was recently certified as a monarch butterfly way-station. They are offering free admission to Hartford residents in the month of August. – Project of the Week

– Our project of the week is the Or Torah High School built in 2010 in Jerusalem, Israel. Or Torah is a Yeshiva high school offering intensive Jewish studies emphasizing the relevance of Torah to modern life as well as a high level of secular studies, including technology, communications and the arts from grades 7 through 12. It was a pilot project by the Jerusalem Municipality and is the first public building in Jerusalem to apply a greenroof.

Arie Kutz of Studio Landscape Architecture and Nir – Kutz Architects says, “the design process was done with the students,” and the “final plans were directly inspired from sketches done by them.” The execution was a collaboration between a professional contractor, using ZinCo systems, and the students with their teachers. All of the timber work: the wooden deck, benches, etc, was done by the Carpentry Class of the school. They also participated in the planting process, and the follow up care is in control of the Science Class. About half of the greenroof is intensive and the other half extensive with a variety of local vegetation planted with about 12 inches of substrate.

– Henry Goldman of Bloomberg.com, says “Brooklyn Yields Cucumbers as NYC Expands Industrial Roof Farms.” Part of Mayor Bloomberg’s two-year-old strategy to reduce emissions of climate-changing carbon gases 30% by 2030, the 1 acre farm capable of sprouting 2-tons of rainbow chard, kale, basil, eggplant and cucumbers sits on top of an industrial building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Currently New York City’s largest rooftop garden, it will soak up more 1 million gallons of stormwater a year. That water that would otherwise overflow sewers and runoff into local rivers, will be used to irrigate the crops, and the soil will provide better insulation for the building, reducing heating and cooling costs.

This is Brooklyn Grange’s second farm, and along with the leafy greens, they intend to grow aromatic herbs, heirloom tomatoes and carrots from April to November, with cover crops such as clover in winter to prevent erosion and to replenish vital nutrients.

– ForConstructionPros.com talks about “Phoebe Sumter Medical Center Is First LEED Silver Certified Medical Center Campus In Georgia.” Phoebe Sumter Medical Center has received LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council on the fourth and final building, making it the first LEED-Silver certified medical center campus in Georgia. With every building now being certified LEED Silver, the campus includes a 190,000-square-foot, 76-bed hospital as well as three outpatient facilities: a women’s and family health center, oncology and surgery center and a wellness and education center.

Brasfield & Gorrie, Gresham, Smith and Partners, KLMK Group and TLC Engineering for Architecture worked with Phoebe Putney Health System to design and build the healthcare campus after an EF3 tornado swept through Americus, Georgia in 2007, demolishing the community’s former facility. They didn’t want to replace the old building but design and build for the future. They always had LEED certification in mind, and now all four buildings are officially certified. To achieve Silver certification, certain guidelines needed to met and some of the highlights include: stormwater management, an irrigation system that utilizes captured rainwater, energy efficiency like an improved thermal envelope, reduced interior lighting power density and high efficiency HVAC systems, and a 26,000-square-foot greenroof to improve the hospital’s thermal performance and as well help to heal patients faster in a more pleasantly beautiful setting.

– Project of the Week

– Our project of the week is the Greensboro Transit Authority Maintenance Facility and Administrative Offices built in 2011, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Operating a fleet of 104 buses, the new $15.8 million, 65,000 square foot facility is expected to enhance GTA service delivery efficiency and quality of service to current and future riders in Greensboro. This new transit building is reducing its carbon footprint with a greenroof, solar panels, and “by utilizing natural daylight, automated lighting controls, enhanced energy efficiencies and thermal envelope, highly recyclable and rapidly renewable resources, and local materials encompassed with a 40-year building commitment to the facility.” It is also seeking LEED Gold certification.

The Greensboro Transit Authority Maintenance Operations Facility and Administrative Offices is the first greenroof on a Greensboro city building, and the living roof was installed on October 29, 2011. LiveRoof ® 4″ deep Standard Modules were used over a GAF EverGuard 60 mil TPO roof membrane and slip sheet. Multiple plant mixes of Sedums and other succulents make up most of the vegetative lower roof with solar panels for hot water on the higher roof.

– Samantha Jeffreys of WREX.com reports on “Nicholas Conservatory installing green roof garden.” The Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens, in the Rockford Park District, is getting a new look with a 4,300-square-foot-green roof garden. Greenroofs offer many benefits like reducing stormwater runoff, reducing the building’s energy use, and extending the life of the roof.

The LiveRoof ® Hybrid Green Roof System was chosen for the project because according to Park District landscape architect Jason Ney, the system establishes a “naturally functioning, living system with a continuous surface of soil.” The roof is expected to be done by August and includes modules with plants in several native species that will attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other insects and birds beneficial to the roof and our environment.

– Carol James of the Natural Resources Defense Council Blog, asks “So, what’s a green roof got to do with it?” And she answers “well, lots, if you care about the environment.” Like I just mentioned, greenroofs offer many benefits such as reducing stormwater and extending the roof’s life but they also improve the air quality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, insulating buildings, which reduces heating and cooling costs and they also add a beautiful view.

Wouldn’t you rather look at your window and see visually pleasing plants and flowers instead of black or gray concrete? Carol James would and does working at her Washington, DC office and says she feel grateful for it. Her office’s greenroof is an extension of the terrace on the third floor, allowing her to have a perfect view of the lush greenery. She is seeing first hand how much the roof absorbs the rainwater during thunderstorms, preventing the runoff from going untreated into the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. This is only one roof on one building and if more buildings across DC – and across big cities in our country – would green their roofs, the benefits would be exponential.

– Project of the Week

– Our project of the week is the Nashville Music City Center built in 2012 in Nashville, Tennessee. This Center is a 1.2 million square foot convention center just finished last month in the South of Broadway district in Nashville. The finished roof has three independent greenroof sections on its wavy roof; and also features a 360,000 gallon water reclaim tank, which is used for things like flushing the toilets and site irrigation. With the design of the grand ballroom portion of the roof, the Music Center Team envisioned installing solar panels.

The Center is working to achieve LEED Silver status, and a prominent feature of this will be the 175,000 square-foot greenroof, designed to flow along with the rolling hills of Tennessee. Rooflite ® provided the growing media, Sempergreen the pre-vegetated mats, Sika Sarnafil the waterproofing membrane and the greenroof was designed by Roofmeadow.

– The Materials Handling World Magazine talks about “Leading supplier of single ply roof membranes, Sika-Trocal Helps Reduce “˜Carbon Pawprint.'” Sika-Trocal has helped to keep stray and abandoned dogs sheltered at the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centres in Shrewsbury and Loughborough (UK). Sika-Trocal’s single ply roof membranes have been used on these buildings to create beautifully stunning greenroofs. Specialist roofing contractor Telclad was assigned to complete the roof installations, and developed a series of retention battens that would be strong enough to restrain the curved greenroof from slippage while meeting Sika-Trocal’s installation standards.

Delivered by main contractor McPhillips and designed by architects Peter Napier & Co., the facilities were built as environmentally sustainable as possible to help reduce the Dogs Trust’s carbon “pawprint.” The design incorporated materials with low environmental impact including rainwater harvesting, solar panels and a greenroof, helping the building to become the first of its kind to achieve the highest BREEAM Outstanding rating in the world.

– Business Green says, “Scientists: Green walls lead to cleaner cities.” “Lining cities with wall[s] of vegetation could reduce air pollution by 30 per cent at less cost than current policies.” According to a new research published in the journal of Environmental Science and Technology, plants can clean the air of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter, which cause a huge portion of the 35,000 to 50,000 of premature deaths in the UK that are attributed to outdoor air pollution each year. The World Health Organization’s outdoor air quality database puts the figure of air quality related premature deaths at more than one million a year worldwide.

Scientists at the Universities of Birmingham and Lancaster say pollution struggles to escape “street canyons,” which makes planting green walls of grass, climbing ivy and other plants way more effective at filtering out pollutants than previously thought. Transport for London has installed green walls at Edgware Road station and at The Mermaid in Blackfriars, as part of a package of targeted short term measures introduced where particulate levels are at their highest.

– Project of the Week

– Our project of the week is the Indianapolis Children’s Museum Green Roof built in 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana. In celebration of Earth Week 2010 the Children’s Museum installed a GreenGrid green roof system that is now a permanent colorful learning exhibit for all who visit. The green roof is viewable from the approximately 60-foot-wide Sunburst Window, located on the Mezzanine level of the Sunburst Atrium. There is an educational kiosk along the window that provides children with information on what a green roof is and how it benefits the environment. The museum’s green roof compliments the existing expansive rain garden below.

With approximately 1 million visitors each year, this green roof provides excellent educational outreach for sustainable building products and best management practices. Five color contrasting plant mixes where used creating Red, Orange-Yellow, Blue-Purple, Light Green and Dark Green zones. A lightweight 100% recycled rubber “faux” flagstone paver was used around the walkway, flush and intermixed with the vegetation. The G3 GreenGrid module was used and each plant mix featured at least 50% evergreen Sedum varieties.

– Gordon Severson of Kaaltv.com talks about “Winona State University House Going Green.” Winona State University has been establishing itself as not only one of the greenest and most sustainable colleges in Minnesota but also in the U.S. This week, construction crews were making last minute additions to the Theme House. Interim President Connie Gores says, “It truly represents the students being able to live what they learn,” and that it “lives our mission which is about a community of learners improving our world. I think this truly is the embodiment of that.”

The Theme House includes bricks on the driveway that collect rainwater, preventing stormwater runoff that would otherwise flow into the river, energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, solar panels and a greenroof. Construction should be done by the end of July and students can move in this September.

– Max Salsbury of 24Dash.com says, “Beetles return to Abbey Road.” Over 40 years ago, The Beatles recorded their “Abbey Road” album, and now a different kind of beetle is calling Abbey Road home. Dor, ground and sexton beetles have moved into the Abbey housing greenroof in North London.

“The Hive” building is home to beetles, moths, butterflies, spiders and wildflowers. The roof has log piles and stones so that bugs can bask and burrow. Nectar and pollen rich wildflowers like bird’s foot trefoil and viper’s bugloss attract pollinators such as bees; and the plot is just a short way from Abbey Road studios where The Beatles made their last recorded album. Camden Council Cabinet member for sustainability, Councillor Phil Jones, said, “This project shows the benefits that re-creating habitats for wildlife in urban areas can bring,” and that “this is a wonderful project that protects endangered species, improves biodiversity and can be enjoyed by the whole community.”

– Project of the Week

– Our project of the week is the Hotel Gaia-B3 Vertical Ecosystem built in 2012 in Bogotá, Colombia. B3 Hotels are a Colombian-born brand of select service hotels located in key markets throughout the country for the budget conscious business traveler. The Hotel Gaia-B3 Vertical System was completed on March 1, 2012, with more than 25,000 plants representing 55 different species covering 400 square meters and 8 floors.

The project involved a lot of research and planning; and prior investigation of appropriate plants was conducted by the Spanish firm Paisajismo Urbano in local tropical forest jungles, resulting in 40% local native plants being used. The hydroponic Vertical Ecosystem will allow local species to self-pollinate and it carries biological nutrients and pest repellent which is recycled through the remotely controlled irrigation system. To the delight of its owners, the Hotel Gaia-B3 vertical garden has become quite popular in Bogotá and has turned into its own tourist attraction.

– ENR.com talks about “Green Roofs Take Root in India.” They say green roofs and rooftop gardens are “gaining ground in India. Technology and climate is playing an important role in their environmental payback.” The Confederation of Indian Industry’s Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre (CII-Godrej GBC) was one of the first commercial buildings in India to have a green roof and it houses the India Green Building Council.

Green roofs mitigate the urban heat island effect, minimize a building’s impact on the micro-climate and living habitat, cool the interiors of buildings, and the plants reduce CO2 levels in the air and overall pollution. According to India’s census last year, urbanization is expected to touch 40% of the population by 2021, and planning authorities have designated 533 infrastructure projects worth about $11.1 billion to meet this demand. Green roofs are the smart way to go with this projected increase in urbanization.

– Darren Quick of Gizmag, says “Eco-friendly ATM accesses environmental savings.” Brazil’s Edra Equipamentos has created an eco-friendly ATM booth made from environmentally friendly recycled materials. A photovoltaic solar panel on the roof powers the booth’s LED lighting at night, and during the day, natural light comes through a clear “Solatube” system coated with a 3M film that blocks more than 80% of infrared rays to help keep the inside cool.

The roof can also be fitted with a rainwater collector, making it possible to grow plants. And the booth also features an automatic door and an entry ramp for wheelchair access.

– Our project of the week is the Banyan Street Manor Rooftop Farm & Vertical Gardens built in 2012 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Located in the Kalihi section of Honolulu, Banyan Street Manor debuted the first USDA Certified Organic rooftop farm on top of an affordable housing project along with three vertical gardens. A variety of Asian herbs and more than 20 types of produce including tomatoes, lettuce, eggplant, and green beans will be grown on the roof. 40% of the produce will be grown free of charge to building residence and the remaining produce will be sold to Whole Foods Market and other local grocery stores.

Distributors of Green Living Technologies International, 1st Look Exteriors, will manage and maintain the 790 sf of Green Living Walls and the 2,000 square foot roof top organic garden. A cooling feature of Banyan Street Manor is a white roof, and photovoltaic panels generate electricity to power the common areas and offset overall operating costs. It will also feature the largest living wall in the state.

– Melissa Harris, of the Chicago Tribune reports on “Living green wall planned for InterContinental Chicago.” The chief executive of Strategic Hotels & Resorts, Laurence Geller, plans to add life to the InterContinental Chicago hotel on North Michigan Avenue with a 9,800-square-foot green wall. If approved by the City Council, this will be the largest wall of its kind in North America. Chicago is known for its greenroofs but has few green walls, experts say, due to the cost and climate.

The new Rivers Casino in Des Plaines has a small indoor one, and the Chicago Botanic Garden’s new children’s garden has four outdoor walls that cover about a total of 670 square feet. The team is working with Green Living Technologies International, which has great experience and built the walls at the botanic garden. The plants will be grown indoors and slowly, over several months, be rotated to a 90-degree angle before being planted on the wall.

– Kevin Ma of the St. Albert Gazette, talks about “Garden experiment takes over Enjoy Centre roof.” He says, “rooftop gardens bring efficiency and exotic tomatoes,” and that “city residents could get to eat Boxcar Willie in about a month if all goes well at an experimental rooftop garden at the Hole’s greenhouse.” Volunteers gathered to help plant four rooftop gardens at the Enjoy Centre last week. The gardens are part of an experiment by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) to test the effects of plants on Alberta roofs. The test modules on the four roofs contain custom-made dirt, that has specific nutrient and water-retention levels, sensors and plants.

The team will track heat, moisture, photosynthesis and carbon storage rates in the modules over the next five years. They are also conducting an experiment with 61 tomato plants on the roof to see if they can grow local food. These are black, purple, and striped tomatoes with names like Boxcar Willie and Amish Paste. The team is growing 28 varieties, about 80% of which are heritage tomatoes; and if all goes well, the vegetables should be ready for the Prairie Bistro restaurant downstairs by August.

– Our project of the week is the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center, built in 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia. The former site of Atlanta’s most popular retailer throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, the iconic Rich’s Department Store, the present Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center serves as the home of several federal agencies and is one of the city’s most environmentally friendly facilities. The high-rise building of the Center houses a forested courtyard with a stand of approximately 50 maple trees, flowering cherry trees, and various other deciduous species, as well as native drought-resistant vegetation and paths of semi-pervious concrete pavers.

Utilizing American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, the $2.6 million project renovation’s goals, consistent with the General Services Administration’s rooï¬ng program, were to provide thermal and moisture protection; conserve energy and the environment; reduce utility costs; and help attain energy security by meeting Energy Independence and Security Act requirements. In 2011 the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center received the inaugural RoofPoint™ Award from the Center of Environmental Innovation in Rooï¬ng for “Excellence in Life Cycle Management,” distinguished by its efficient re-use of original roofing materials, and it has received other awards, too.

The two vegetated roofs are beautiful highlights of the buildings, with more than 198,000 colorful sedums, delospermas, native cacti, alliums and more from Saul Nurseries. They were planted 3 plugs per square foot and are set in 4 inches of growing media from ItSaul Natural in a planting plan designed by Tremco Rooï¬ng’s Mary Ann Uhlmann.

– Charles A. Birnbaum of the Huffington Post talks about “The Real High Line Effect — A Transformational Triumph of Preservation and Design.” New York’s High Line, the stretch of abandoned elevated railroad on New York’s West Side that has been transformed into a public park and one of the city’s most popular destinations, has generated a lot of buzz about the so-called “High Line effect.” Several cities are looking at their own forgotten areas, trying to figure out how they too can transform them into environmentally-friendly spaces. The High Line was made possible by a team of landscape architects, architects, horticulturalists, engineers and others, led by James Corner Field Operations, and they were able to keep historic preservation and design.

By the way, the High Line isn’t the only successful “adaptive reuse” approach that works; San Francisco’s Crissy Field was an asphalt airfield and now is a “must-go-to destination that connects San Franciscans with their industrial waterfront heritage while restoring and conserving its natural and ecological values.”

Other projects include the 36-acre Point State Park in Pittsburgh, Tampa’s NationsBank Plaza, designed in the 1980s by Dan Kiley and now known as Kiley Garden, and Philip Johnson’s Water Garden in Fort Worth, Texas. Landscape architect Laurie Olin suggests that when thinking about changes to an urban landscape that has a history, the conversation should address what stays and what goes and the virtues of bringing something new or an addition to an existing site.

– Rachel Nuwer of ecomagination.com says, “Eating on a Green Roof: New York’s Buildings Provide Food, Habitat for Wildlife.” She says, “New York’s green roofs do more than add a splash of green to the urban habitat. They also provide a crucial stopping ground and habitat for birds flying through.

Researcher Dustin Partridge tracks the insect life on roofs throughout New York to see if the roofs are providing food sources for the birds.” The author visited Partridge on one of his roofs and put together a great video on the full article about the studies he’s conducting on New York’s green roofs. He talks about the visiting birds and what wildlife benefits green roofs provide and compares the data he received with traditional black roofs.

– Project of the Week

– Our project of the week is the Vicenza (San Bortolo) Hospital, built in 2008 in Vicenza, Italy. This hospital is part of the “Corporate Health Authority 6 Vicenza,” and is the main hospital of the city of Vicenza, Italy. The greenroof project area is about 2,500 square meters on a flat roof above the interior of the public facility. Architect Enrico Dall’Osto worked to design the greenroof so that it could contribute to the healing process of the hospital’s patients, while offering a nice and beautiful green space.

The intensive greenroof area plants include Hypericum “Hidcote,“ Rosa austrariana, Spirea bumalda, and Berberis “Rose Glow;“ the extensive areas are planted with various types of sedums. The system substrate is German, made from Flordepot, and imported in Italy from ClimaGruen.

– Richard Morgan of the Wall Street Journal Blog has a “Q&A: A [Columbia University] Professor Pushes for Greener NYC.” Earlier this year, officials announced that the world’s largest rooftop garden will be built in Sunset Park in New York City. Wall Street Journal’s Metropolis checked in with Columbia University microbiologist, Dickson Despommier, who advocates for urban greenhouses he calls “vertical farms.”

He talks about vertical farms around the world like NuVege in Japan that sells radiation-free vegetables from a three-story vertical farm, The Plant, in Chicago, and The Plantagon, a “true” vertical farm tower in Sweden. He also says Queens has “all that empty, wasted warehouse space out there….It’s that these farms fix hunger, they fix unemployment, they fix health, they develop a sense of connection and community, they do all the best things a city structure can do.”

– The Seattle Post Intelligencer Blog says “Twitter employees revel in company’s new headquarters.” Twitter moved 800 employees to the Art Deco building on Market, and Monday morning, they opened its doors with a rooftop barbecue and hundreds of employees relishing in the wonderful weather and new lush greenroof. City officials hope this move will help jumpstart other corporate and commercial companies in the area to refresh and rejuvenate life and add green spaces into their own buildings.

– Project of the Week

– Our project of the week is the Six Feet Under Pub & Fish House, built in 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia. This popular seafood and raw bar has two locations in Atlanta, one in Grant Park and the other in Westside. The Westside location boasts a lush plant storefront, but the main curb appeal is their small custom-designed green roof pavilion structure in front of the restaurant where patrons can sit and relax. Also, you can go upstairs to the roof patio/bar and catch the terrific views of the city from above the green roof. The airy wood deck has a long bar and ample umbrella-covered seating, and the long colorfully planted flower box with shrubs and vines surrounding the deck provides beautiful blooms, and a peek over the edge reveals the pitched greenroof, colorful in various seasons.

Owner Tad Mitchell was intrigued by green roofs, and wanted to create an appealing cool space for his customers while outside. The restaurant is doing its part to reduce their carbon footprint; for example, the windmill at their Westside location reduces the amount of greenhouse gas electricity that they use and helps to feed the power grid. In addition, Six Feet Under Pub & Fish House: recycles compostables, paper and cardboard as possible; uses and maintains energy-efficient equipment; uses compact fluorescent, linear fluorescent or LED lighting; powers up & powers down; does not use plastic water and soda bottles; uses takeout packaging to include corn starch to-go cups, takeaway utensils made from potato starch and recyclable paperboard takeout containers; and uses only recycled paper.

Climate Desk, a journalistic collaboration with The Atlantic, Mother Jones, Slate, and others went to the city’s rooftops to see first-hand how the roofscape of New York is adapting to our changing climate. – Zoe Settle of the Huffington Post Blog, talks about “A Yacht With A Conscience.” Swiss designers Milena Cvijanovich and Denis Muller of MCM Design Studio have come up with a sexy sustainable luxury mega-yacht. Island(E)motion will have a green roof, solar panels, wind turbines and a rainwater collector. Cvijanovich is the daughter of Dr. George B. Cvijanovich, the inventor of one of the first solar panels, and she’s made environmental awareness and sustainability key components in her design.

Island(E)motion features over 700,000 square meters of flexible photovoltaic solar panels on the flat roofs, which will supply enough energy to cover basic electricity. Thermal panels provide hot water and small wind turbines will run the rest of the electrical needs with bio-diesel electric backup generators on hand. The recycled-steel hull was designed to reduce fuel consumption, a brand-new propeller system captures the best of hydrogen and LNG fuel cell technology and, it also boasts rainwater storage and grey and black water reuse. Also, the MCM team planned for the traditional yachting needs, including a helipad, massage rooms, a sandy beach and a dining room that seats 24.
