I am currently employed in nursery
sales and as an entry level landscape architect. These jobs are wonderful
and I am very fortunate to have them in this economy but they are not my
passion. I am a recent graduate from Rutgers Landscape Architecture program
and am GRP accredited. My career goal is to heal through design and I see
tremendous potential for this through the utilization of green roofs and
walls. I love what they can do in terms of helping us cope with climate
change, bring life to a concrete jungle through habitat restoration, in
addition to making the urban environment a much more desirable place to
live. I would appreciate any position dealing with green roof design,
product development, promotion, or installation.

Position Wanted for a Green Roof Project Managing
position in Philadelphia, PA
Job Wanted Posting:
March 28, 2010 Availability:
Present Relocation: Yes
My name is Gavin DiRusso. I frequent the
Greenroofs.com website and I stumbled upon your job postings. I’m looking
for a green roof project managing position in Philadelphia, PA. I worked for
an award winning architectural/green development company in Philadelphia, PA
called Onion Flats as their green roof division manager and I aspire for an
analogous position. Onion Flats L.L.C. was made up of an architectural
firm, Plumbob, and a construction company, JIG, Inc. Through advanced
designs and eco-friendly construction techniques Onion Flats created the
nation’s first LEED Platinum Multi-Family Residential building, Thin Houses.
I showed up at their doorstep with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical
Engineering and an interest in green roofs. I ended up leaving with a job
offer and an exciting new direction in life.
I rejected my engineering job offers and decided to take a stab at my new
found passion. Onion Flats at the time was a small but growing firm so, as
Tim McDonald-Owner/Architect put it, I would have to “create my own
position.” With the half hearted support of my parents I worked for free
rent the first month at Onion Flats and began creating their green roof
division from the ground up. Needless to say I earned my keep that first
month by analyzing their previous projects. I presented that through
creative design, product research, and different install techniques I would
be able to decrease their project cost significantly and be a major asset to
their company. As the green roof division manager I was responsible for
every aspect of construction, communication, bidding, advertising, and
deigns. We even hosted several meeting to discuss future initiatives and
incentives with city officials and local green developers. JIG, Inc. Green
Roof Division was a licensed Roofscapes Inc’s green roof systems installer
but I became familiar with several other systems through research and
bidding. Such bids had me learn about LiveRoof modular systems as well as
American Hydrotech and GreenGrid systems.
I would be an essential asset to any company looking for a project manager
in or around Philadelphia because I worked closely with the horticulturalist
and architects of these green roof systems and created a great relationship
with the green roof soil manufactures and many other vendors in the field. I
learned how to open and operate a green roof division with very little
oversight which proves that I am a self-starter and very dedicated to my
work. I have became very adept to the construction techniques of these
systems and the techniques of general building construction as well.
Please visit the JIG, Inc. Green Roof Division website, currently known as
G.R.A.S.S. (http://www.onionflats.com/GRASS/#),
and the YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlNgImshtpI)
promotional video I made. Please contact me if you need anything more
(or less) from me.
Thank you,
Gavin DiRusso
