The Watermark Kendall luxury apartments consist of two residential towers, East and West, attached by a lobby on the first floor and a courtyard greenroof on the second floor.

Because of its two beautiful living roofs which offer distinctive amenities, today we’re featuring the recently renovated Watermark Kendall West.

Designed by CBT Architects and situated in the heart of Kendall Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the LEED Gold certified Watermark Kendall West offers residential, commercial, and retail. In April 2014 Recover Green Roofs installed two roof patios on the 2nd and 21st floors designed to provide residents with recreational and leisure spaces overlooking Cambridge, the Charles River, and downtown Boston.

The Second Floor Terrace is a 15,000 sf amenity space connecting the two residential towers. In 2018, Recover Green Roofs and landscape architects IBI Placemaking renovated the west side of the 2nd floor rooftop courtyard to include a variety of activity areas, more shaded seating, and a greater diversity of plants to draw local pollinators.

As part of the selective demolition, Recover was able to salvage and recycle both inert materials and organic matter, including four mature Redbud trees that are now happily thriving elsewhere. With new growing media by Naturcycle, this 2nd floor terrace features a custom outdoor kitchen, large exercise safety surface and synthetic turf lawn, bar-top seating under a custom-made steel pergola, sleek media lounge, a light trellis over cafe style seating, and wood privacy pergolas.

Why artificial turf? Designers say living lawns are preferred, but they needed low maintenance and durability for the highly programmed space. Installed with Bison Innovative Products, each seating area is buffered by planters of grasses and flowering perennials that provide late-season foraging for pollinators, creating comfortable spaces for groups and individuals on this nearly half-acre amenity roof.

Sedum mats surround hardscaping pathways, and four large Japanese Maple trees have room to grow in large custom planters.

The 21st floor rooftop terrace, also known as the ‘Sky Deck,’ offers breathtaking panoramic views. The 1,800 sf terrace features Brazilian hardwood decking, concrete pavers, seating and meeting space with high-end finishes, custom-fabricated planters, living walls, and drought-tolerant grasses and plantings. This green roof also features Bison wood tiles and pedestals surrounded by a grass lawn that is dog-friendly.
