Earth Day 2021

The official Earth Day 2021 poster was created by Speto, acclaimed Brazilian street artist from São Paulo.

Tomorrow as we celebrate the 51st Earth Day on April 22, the global movement continues to give voice to the ever-emerging public consciousness about the state of our planet, and how to #RestoreOurEarth.

In honor of Earth Day 2021 for our Featured Project, rather than highlighting just one, we felt it would be appropriate to showcase various beautiful and important examples of living architecture from around the world.

If these look familiar, they should be! We made a video of these favorite projects last year for the inauguration of World Green Roof Day 2020, and they are some of my absolute personal favorite projects – large and small – for a variety of reasons.

Earth Day 2021

Speaking of World Green Roof Day, the second year celebration of #WGRD2021 will be held once more on June 6, 2021. Along with its organizers, GRO (Green Roof Organisation), we’ll be spreading the word on social media, posting, and celebrating. We hope you will be, too, so share your own greenroof photos, videos, and stories!

Of course, April is also World Landscape Architecture Month, so these international examples of living architecture and green infrastructure are quite appropriate.

Situated in the middle of Fukuoka City, Japan, ACROS Fukuoka Prefectural International Hall is a center of international, cultural and information exchange and underneath lies over one million square feet of multipurpose space. Designed by architect Emilio Ambasz, a pioneer of ecological architecture, the nearly 100,000-square-meter ACROS is located adjacent to Tenjin Central Park—the only open green space in in the city center.

The design for ACROS Fukuoka proposes a powerful new solution for a common urban problem: reconciling a developer’s desire for profitable use of a site with the public’s need for open green space. The plan for Fukuoka fulfills both needs in one structure by creating an innovative agro-urban model.

Located in the north of Singapore, Kampung Admiralty is Singapore’s first building to bring together a mix of public facilities and services under one roof. The multi-award winning Kampung Admiralty is an 11-story public housing complex in the island city-state targeted to seniors with an amazing amount of greenery embedded on and within its many levels. In fact, 110% of its footprint has been covered in vegetation. Over 100% landscape replacement was achieved through ground level planting, greenroofs, and vertical green walls.

Designed by WOHA, Kampung Admiralty offers 104 senior apartments with a host of facilities including a medical center, pharmacy, retail, restaurants, public park, plaza, and more.

Designed by Breedlove Land Planning, the Alpharetta Rock Mill Park is a showcase for stormwater quality treatment and enjoys great public interaction, visibility, and learning opportunities for Georgia residents and visitors. Aside from the Greenroof Pavilion and Trial Gardens, the park includes constructed wetlands, sand and biofiltration ponds, and connectivity to the popular Big Creek Greenway path system.

The original owner of the site was “Sitawake,” Situ,wa,ka, or Situwakee, a full-blood Cherokee. Designed by Linda Velazquez, the plantings of the Greenroof Pavilion (system by American Hydrotech) and site represent both significant native and introduced plants used for medicinal and cultural reasons and those found in the Piedmont forest/wetland area of the Big Creek watershed.
