“Built in 1926, the landmark neo-classical revival Betty Ruth and Milton B. Hollander Foundation Center (formerly The Capitol Building) was donated to Common Ground by the Hollander family, after lying vacant for several years. Common Ground has developed the building as 70 mixed-income residential apartments with 13,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, helping to further downtown Hartford?s revitalization. Fifty-six affordable apartments, consisting of studios and one- and two-bedroom units, are available for households earning 60% of the area median income.

“The Betty Ruth and Milton B. Hollander Foundation Center has a number of environmentally-conscious features including a vegetated roof planted with a mix of native and adapted plant species, high-performance windows, efficient lighting systems including LED exit signs and compact fluorescent light bulbs, low-emission interior finishes, low-flow bathroom fixtures, and Energy Star appliances. as well as recycling chute access on every floor and a dedicated bicycle storage room. The building?s renovation takes advantage of existing architectural features to provide ample daylight and natural ventilation in every unit. Additionally, the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems selected for the building are all energy-efficient, which will result in long-term operational savings for Common Ground and our tenants and a more comfortable interior environment,” (Common Ground, see below).
