With the progression of technology, more and more people are spending their time in front of computers, tablets, TV’s and other screens in alternate realities instead of in the realities that sustain us. But, what if we can mend this discordance? The Internet of Nature (IoN) attempts to do just that. Coined by Dr. Nadina Galle, an award-winning ecological engineer and researcher, IoN is focused on attempting to use new and emerging technologies to monitor and better reconnect people to urban ecosystems. A promising IoN application is the use of soil sensors, said Galle:

“The foundation of urban greenery is soil and it is one of the most undervalued aspects of our urban ecosystem. The beautiful thing is if we get soil right, we can get everything else right. Only with the amount of information we have can we actually better deduce what we need to do in our soil environments. Soil sensors allow us to take measurements in real time which gives us an indication on the soil’s health and what we can do.”

Dr. Nadina Galle will be sharing her expertise on this emerging technology and its use in relation to sustainable urban development at the Grey To Green 2021 Conference hosted by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) in association with the Green Infrastructure Foundation on June 15 & 16. Dr. Galle will be joined by a myriad of speakers who will shed light on various timely topics in relation to green infrastructure and healthy cities, including:

  • Dr. Nina Marie Lister, Associate Professor, Ryerson University
  • Edward McDonnell, CEO, Greenbelt Foundation
  • John Cuddihy, Director, Infrastructure Canada
  • David Yocca, Senior Landscape Architect & Ecological Planner
  • And many more!
