The Greensboro Transit Authority Maintenance Facility and Administrative Offices is a $15.8 million new construction, 65,000 square foot building located on 17 acres that houses all GTA administrative and operations personnel, GTA vehicles and vehicle maintenance. Operating a fleet of 104 buses, the new facility is expected to enhance GTA service delivery efficiency and quality of service to current and future riders in Greensboro.

The new transit building reduces its carbon footprint with a greenroof, solar panels, and "by utilizing natural daylight, automated lighting controls, enhanced energy efficiencies and thermal envelope, highly recyclable and rapidly renewable resources, and local materials encompassed with a 40-year building commitment to the facility. This facility was a collaboration of Moser Mayer Phoenix Associates, Wendel Duchscherer, and Wilbur Smith Associates," (Moser Mayer Phoenix Associates, see below).

The project was completely funded by grants and stimulus money. Funding sources for the 64,000-square-foot facility include: American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 - $5.45 million; Federal Transit Administration; NC Department of Transportation; and the City of Greensboro. The new headquarters and bus garage is seeking LEED Gold certification.

?The building was designed with a green roof in mind as a central architectural element,? says Brian Slevar, AIA, Senior Architectural Designer, Moser Mayer Phoenix Associates. And Kevin Elwood, Greensboro Transit Authority, confirms, ?A green roof is beneficial for reducing the environmental impact of a facility.?

The first greenroof on a Greensboro city building, the Greensboro Transit Authority Maintenance Operations Facility and Administrative Offices living roof was installed on October 29, 2011 and LiveRoof? 4" deep Standard Modules were used over a GAF EverGuard 60 mil TPO roof membrane and slip sheet. Multiple plant mixes of Sedums and other succulents make up most of the vegetative lower roof with solar panels for hot water on the higher roof.

Brian Slevar adds, ?The source of the plants plays a significant role in the success of a green roof project. LiveRoof has regional growers who cultivate the plants locally. Riverbend Nursery did a wonderful job.

?This was our first LiveRoof project. We had used other modular systems before. LiveRoof offers significant advantages. The modules are sturdier. They are designed to allow the plants to grow together to create a unified roof with no plastic grid lines.?
