Located in the docklands area of Isle of Dogs in London, the New Providence Wharf is a private housing development which incorporates inverted intensive greenroofs with each individual terrace area measuring about 430 sf. The primary requirement was to provide a greensward surrounded by low evergreen bushes abutting hard landscaping adjacent to external hot tubs. An expansive ground level podium roof features a large grass oval lawn with a river terrace and a perimeter canal giving privacy to the ground floor balconies. The client’s reason for an extensive green roof was a planning condition for reasons of nature conservation (black redstart birds).

The type of roof is inverted. As this roof is inverted, paving slabs would have had to be used if there was no green element above the insulation. This would have cost ?15 -?17/m2.The Build Up of Roof, Lower Building:WaterproofingInsulationFlora drain fd25,Filter sheet,75mm extensive soil,Sedum plugsAlumasc – ExteriorsHigher building:Sedum mat system by Bauder LtdDetails of Green Roof Element: An extensive soil consisting of crushed recycled porous clay brick at 75mm depth plug planted with sedums.
