Installed in October 2007, this green roof project represented a small piece of a much bigger pie for the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Recently adopted guidelines require that all new EPA buildings be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED?) gold-certified. The project at the Laboratory Annex in Cincinnati included many elements of green design, such as daylighting, an air distribution system to reduce the amount of heat or cold air required to meet room temperature, improved indoor air quality, and materials made from recycled content.
Last but not least, as part of the building design efforts to receive the U.S. Green Building Council?s LEED? certification, the GreenGrid? Modular Green Roof System was incorporated into the design of the EPA?s new research laboratory in Cincinnati. The newly installed green roof covers 8,065 ft2 of the building?s roof space.
