The renovation of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum’s terrace-level roof increased the insulation value, corrected moisture infiltration issues, enhanced aesthetics and incorporated green technologies as part of a master plan to update the historic facility. This vegetated system covers 54% of the roof, making it one of the largest in Pittsburgh!
Through careful investigation, it was discovered that storm water was backing up through the rain water leaders causing damage to interior ornate plaster work throughout exhibit space. The estimates to correct this ailment were in the tens of thousands. Therefore, to preserve aesthetics and save money, the problem was addressed from the exterior by removing 3’x 3′ sections of concrete roof deck at each drain, creating access for new, water-tight connections and avoiding wholesale demolition of the interior plaster.
Moreover, the addition of the green roof reduced the quantity and rate of water being put into the storm water system; further reducing the likelihood of system back-up.
