| Sacred Heart Medical Center is home to 386 private patient rooms and nearly 1.2 million square feet of space. The hospital opened on August 10, 2008 and the Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend is a "brand new, state-of-the-art regional medical center located in Oregon?s picturesque Willamette Valley. The creators of Sacred Heart at RiverBend are on the leading edge of evidence-based hospital design, creating a patient-centered, healing environment with a strong focus on quality clinical outcomes and patient safety. "When PeaceHealth?s volunteer Governing Board chose to locate its new hospital at RiverBend, one of the first steps it took was to adopt environmental stewardship principles to guide the design and development of the site," (Sacred Heart website, see below). In 2009 the American Society for Healthcare Engineering and the American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture for Health selected Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend as the Vista Award winner in the new construction category (Turner Construction, 2009). |

| The holistic concept used in the planning of this campus includes seven rooftop gardens ranging between 4 and 6 stories. These ?eco-roofs? not only provide welcome greenscapes for patients to enjoy, but also intercept storm water and reduce the amount and temperature of runoff entering the city storm water system. Rexius Forest PeaceHealth has made a number of important commitments, and just some include:An innovative, chemical-free cooling water treatment system protects ground water resources and the city?s sewer system by eliminating the need to use or store potentially harmful chemicals. Natural daylight provides significant light throughout the building, which will enhance the patient experience and reduce the need for energy-consuming artificial light. All surface parking lots feature bioswales to treat storm water runoff closest to its source. The bioswales use vegetation, soils, and filter fabric to clean runoff before it reaches the city storm water system. And there are seven rooftop gardens at RiverBend.Rexius Forest By-Products was contracted to do the landscape, irrigation and water features. Using their TM-45MD Express Blower? truck, Rexius placed approximately 220 tons of aggregate, 120 cubic yards of mulch, and over 700 cubic yards of rooftop mix in 14 days. |
