IFLA World Congress 2018 Singapore

As our Media Partners, Greenroofs.com shares the latest on the IFLA (International Federation of Landscape Architects) World Congress 2018 Singapore with its readers, this year held in the fabulous island nation:

Biophilic Cities, Smart Nation and Future Resilience

The IFLA World Congress 2018, the largest and most significant event for landscape professionals in the world, returns to Singapore for the second time from 18 to 21 July 2018 at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.  Themed “Biophilic City, Smart Nation, and Future Resilience,” the 55th ILFA World Congress is jointly organised by IFLA and Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA), and managed by SingEx Exhibitions.

This event will examine how landscape architecture can inspire future urban designs to be more meaningfully connected to nature, bridge social connections and reinforce community resilience. The FLA World Congress Singapore 2018 will also serve as a dedicated platform for participating professionals, government bodies and academics to engage in meaningful and in-depth discussions regarding industry trends and challenges, as well as explore business opportunities and collaborations.

“Latest UN projections expect the world’s population to grow by 2.9 billion – equal to another China and India, in the next 33 years.” ~ The Guardian, 19 March 2018

The need for cities to transform into smart, sustainable and liveable spaces of the future prodded a change in terms of how “landscaping” is perceived around the world.  Landscape architects now have wider professional reach to take on more than merely landscaping.  In concert with urban planners and technologists, landscape architects are progressively making significant contributions to how cities look and function, making platforms such as the IFLA World Congress 2018 timely and apt for governments, academia and industry.

Hear from the industry experts at the 55th IFLA World Congress Singapore 2018 on 18 July – 19 July 2018, and be a part of the thought-provoking exchange on building a Smart Nation!

Susannah C. Drake of DLANDstudio to Keynote at CitiesAlive 2018

Susannah C. Drake of DLANDstudios is a Keynote at CitiesAlive 2018

CitiesAlive 2018

Susannah C. Drake of DLANDstudio is a keynote at CitiesAlive 2018 in New York from September 24-28.

Brought to you by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the theme of the event is Green Infrastructure: Designing the Future of ResilienceCitiesAlive 2018 will explore topics like flood management, biodiversity, biophilic design, urban agriculture, vertical forests, coastal greening, green finance, new performance metrics, advancements in green infrastructure policy and regulations and new research findings.

Susannah Drake stands out in the design industry as a forward thinker and leader in urban design.  With professional design qualifications in both Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Susannah amalgamates ecology, infrastructure and aesthetically pleasing designs in every project she works on.  In 2005, Susannah founded DLANDstudio, a multidisciplinary firm made up of scientists, urban designers, graphic designers, architects and landscape architects based in Brooklyn, NY.

The award-winning and internationally recognized firm designs multifunctional landscape systems to address urban challenges and create more resilient spaces.

DLANDstudio recently designed an open space unlike any other, the Gowanus Canal Sponge Park in New York.  Bordered by industrial buildings and residential neighborhoods, the Gowanus canal has accumulated pollution and toxins over the past few decades.  DLANDstudio’s master plan for the canal will connect public and private lands, include recreational spaces running the length of the canal and connective stitching between land and water.  The revitalization of the canal is especially impressive as it has been designed to be a working landscape that will continue to improve the environment of the canal over time.

Another notable project of DLANDstudio is a linear park planned for Queens.  The 60-year old abandoned Rockaway Long Island Railroad (LIRR) was the center of debate for a number of years.  The project, similar to the High Line, presents an opportunity for outdoor classrooms for neighboring schools and the potential for economic growth.  It will also reduce car dependency in the area, with more than 100,000 people living within a 10-minute walk of the QueensWay.  DLANDstudio will bring its multidisciplinary approach to create a landscape that fosters community engagement and is ecologically productive.

Greenroofs.com Project of the Week: June 18, 2018

The American Psychological Association (APA) Headquarters is an outstanding example of corporate (in this case non-profit) social responsibility.  Its design choices for two properties in Washington, D.C. reflect fostering environmental sustainability on several fronts, especially with the incorporation of greenroofs during renovation (in addition to a utilities plan that uses 100 percent wind energy).

American Psychological Association (APA) Headquarters

We are highlighting the American Psychological Association (APA) Headquarters in memory of Gregory Long of Capitol Greenroofs, who passed away in April.  His company installed both APA building greenroofs.  Greg was a fantastic individual and consummate professional whose belief in greenroofs as a means to create a healthier and more sustainable built environment is evident in all of his work.

The photo below during construction of the American Psychological Association (APA) Headquarters shows Greg and his team’s commitment to getting the job done, even during tough and challenging weather.

“Even the northeaster that blew through with some driving snow showers couldn’t keep us from meeting our deadline. Not ideal to work but hey….sometimes you just have to deal with what mother nature throws at you.” ~ Greg Long, Capitol Greenroofs, 2014

Mini Description & Details

The American Psychological Association (APA) is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States. In an effort to reduce energy consumption, maximize recycling and contribute to a healthier environment, in April 2014 a second greenroof was added to APA properties at their headquarters (see the APA/World Resources Institute HQ from 2008), which qualified for the DDOE grant program.

American Psychological Association (APA) Headquarters

In 2012, the Environmental Protection Agency rated both buildings in the top 10 percent of buildings in the U.S. with the lowest carbon footprint.

The design at the APA HQ building was focused on how greenroofs benefit people’s mental well being. Rebate funding was provided by the District Department of the Environment through a program administered by the Anacostia Watershed Society.

Many private companies were also involved which made this project successful. Installed by Capitol Greenroofs, the system design called for plenty of seating and relaxation with Bison Innovative Products decking tiles, metal planters, and perennial planting areas.

Composed of a mixture of perennials, woody shrubs and small magnolia trees set within modern style seating areas with bright decorative accents, this greened patio creates usable event space with spectacular views of the Capitol building.
