Project of the Week Mini Description & Details

Located in Kirkland, Washington, this former hazardous waste site owned by SRM Development has been transformed into an 180,000 square foot LEED Platinum certified building leased by a private company. Features include a rain catchment system, electric vehicle chargers, highly efficient HVAC systems, and a super insulated building shell. The rooftop deck boasts almost 18,000 square feet of a DIADEM® USA green roof covered with Etera® SEDUM TILE, solar panels, and large seating areas along with spectacular views of nearby Lake Washington and the Seattle skyline. A Tournesol Siteworks green wall graces one of the outer walls.

Landscape architect Forrest Jammer of TRA (Thomas Rengstorf & Associates) designed the site’s pedestrian paving, furniture, hardscape, and plantings. Indeed, more than half the site is covered by rooftop plantings. He specified a green roof to not only provide an aesthetically pleasing retreat, but also complement the overall sustainability goals of the expansion. The amenity space on the roof includes seating offering sweeping views of the colorful foliage on the curvaceous patterns on the green roof as well as in raised planter boxes that were custom fabricated to hold a greater variety of taller plants. TRA utilized Etera® pre-vegetated SEDUM TILE on the extensive area for immediate and complete coverage. Etera custom grew a mat with the specified mix of sedums as well as the accent perennials grown into the mats. A combination of grasses and flowering perennials were used as accent plants including Pennisetum, Festuca, Achillea, Allium, Penstemon and Rudbeckia, and the accent perennials are growing strong with their living mulch of sedum groundcovers. The result is a green roof with the instant vegetative coverage of a SEDUM TILE mat and the color, texture, and interest of a plug roof showcasing panoramic vistas of the lake, mountains, and beautiful downtown Seattle.
