Nellie Reynolds Gardens Senior Apartment Development is an 85,000-square-foot housing development for low-income seniors, constructed on the site of a former victory garden in North Philadelphia. Crowned by a 24,000-square-foot greenroof, it sports plenty of flowering plants and the $23.4-million development is slated to be a model of energy efficiency and a clean environment in this older, industrial neighborhood of Strawberry Mansion.

The 64-unit Nellie Reynolds Garden Senior Apartment Development is named in honor of a longtime public housing advocate and PHA Board of Commissioners member. Designed by Kitchen and Associates Architectural Services of Philadelphia to use energy, water, and materials resourcefully and efficiently, the building features an indoor atrium and a senior health-care center.

Philadelphia Housing Authority?s first greenroof facility, Nellie Reynolds Gardens features a 19,200 ft2 GreenGrid? roof with 4,800 2’x2’x 4″ GreenGrid? Extensive modules. The roof prevents runoff of 300,000 gallons of storm water into city sewers, enhancing local stream conditions and saving taxpayers money. The low-growing foliage of hardy Sedums cover about half an acre and help the building save energy and absorb rain runoff.
