The Electronic Arts Motion Capture Studio is located beside environmentally sensitive Guichon Creek in Burnaby. Because of its proximity to Guichon Creek, City staff worked with Electronic Arts to incorporate sustainability principles into the development. This effort includes commitments for LEED Silver standard, and both extensive and intensive green roofs. This project submission only describes the extensive green roof at EA. Completed in September, 2005, the green roof represents a collaborative research initiative by Electronic Arts, BCIT Centre for the Advancement of Green Roof Technology and the City of Burnaby. Electronic Arts is a world leader in interactive entertainment software for personal computers, and employs over 1,000 people in the Lower Mainland. The company?s research, development and head office is consolidated in Burnaby. In 2004, the City of Burnaby approved an expansion of over 200,000 ft2 of floor space. Because of its proximity to Guichon Creek, City staff worked with Electronic Arts to incorporate sustainability principles into the development, including commitments for LEED Silver standard, and both extensive and intensive green roofs.In 2007, BCIT instrumented the 15,418 ft2 extensive green roof to monitor and evaluate stormwater runoff and membrane temperatures. Preliminary data shows that the extensive green roof is extremely effective for these functions. A monumental rain event exceeding a 10 year storm occurred in September 2007, and the green roof delayed runoff for 3 hours and reduced peak flow by 90%. And over the course of the warm season, the temperature of the membrane under the green roof fluctuated by 5?C instead of the typical 41?C.
Project Materials, Construction & Details:The green roof system was provided by Soprema, using the “Sopranature” System-Taiga:- Waterproof membrane: Soprema 2 Ply SBS- Insulation: Polyisocyanurate foam insulation RSI 6- Protection layer and root barrier: 1/4″ DensDeck- Drainage layer: Sopradrain 10-G- Filter cloth and root barrier: MicrofabThe Growing medium was provided by Stream Organics Management, as an equal volume of sand, white pumice and compost amendment. Depth of the growing medium ranges from 100 ? 150 mm (5″ to 11″).
