Featuring 121 offices and 17 classrooms, Appalachian State University in North Carolina unveiled its new Reich College of Education building in August, 2011. Sustainability is one of the five key goals of the university. The university expects to receive LEED certification for the $35 million structure, which includes a green roof, motion-sensor lights and cork flooring. Recycled materials were used during construction and solar panels were installed on the roof to help with domestic water heating.

Appalachian State University?s first green roof on new construction followed a successful retrofit project also installed by Living Roofs, Inc. The traditional built up extensive green roof is located on the fifth floor and is visible from inside the building.

The first green roof at ASU was installed on the Appalachian State (ASU) Kerr Scott Hall by Living Roofs, Inc. in September, 2010 – see that profile in The Greenroof & Greenwall Projects Database.
