Greenroofs.com Featured Project March 2, 2020
As we start looking forward to spring here in the northern hemisphere, the promise of warmer weather conjures walks in nature and perhaps lounging poolside with friends. Why not do both in one awesome location, and better yet, how about up in a sky garden?
Residents of Los Angeles already have excellent weather, and now the apartment dwellers at 888 at Grand Hope Park don’t have to leave their building to enjoy nature in a luxurious setting with their own tranquil escape at PARK 888!
Excerpt from Greenroofs.com Project Profile:
888 at Grand Hope Park is a luxury residential tower in downtown Los Angeles offering contemporary living with a variety of apartment units atop 6,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Merging natural elements with an urban setting, the soaring 34-story, 525-unit apartment tower features a rooftop clubhouse, and an expansive open-air amenity deck on the eighth floor – with a significant emphasis on resident wellness.
Designed by CallisonRTKL and Studio-MLA, the jewel of 888 at Grand Hope Park is the 30,000 square foot intensive green roof amenity deck, PARK 888.
Inspired by the nearby San Gabriel Mountains, the teams layered a rich, lower-mountain landscape to connect and surround PARK 888’s amenity spaces with wooded groves and meandering paths. Rising 75 feet in the air and providing breathtaking city views, the immersive experience in nature at PARK 888 is intended to enhance residents’ lives while redefining the idea of what a residential amenity deck can be.
Surrounding PARK 888’s amenity zones are a BBQ lounge, outdoor cinema, dog park, activity lawn, and a resort-style pool with cabanas.
Installed by BrightView, the green roof garden landscaping includes trees, walking paths, and a pool. With resiliency and sustainability in mind, the beautiful design encompasses over a thousand plants and 85 trees to embrace a network of greenery and connect the high-end amenity spaces to one another throughout the roof deck.
The challenge was to create the proper growth environment so that the trees, shrubs, and turf areas would grow and thrive. This challenge was met and succeeded using the rooflite® three-part Rooftop Trees Soil System in those areas where the overall depth of the soil buildup reached three feet in depth. rooflite extensive was used for the large turf areas.
888 at Grand Hope Park helps strengthen the pedestrian connection between South Park and the Financial District along Hope Street. An important addition to the evolution of downtown Los Angeles, 888 at Grand Hope Park incorporates elements that enhance the dynamic, walkable, and re-vitalized South Park community.
888 at Grand Hope Park offers contemporary luxury living and PARK 888 enhances the feeling of being in nature – right in the middle of the city – providing residents a verdant escape from the urban bustle below with panoramic downtown LA views.
