The Woodruff Arts Center is the heartbeat of Atlanta’s arts community. Opened in 1968, the Woodruff Arts Center is home to the Alliance Theatre, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the High Museum of Art, Young Audiences and the 14th Street Playhouse. Located in midtown, the Center offers Atlantans a bold variety of performing and visual arts – both traditional and avant-garde. For 30 years, Woodruff Center has set the arts standard for Atlanta and the Southeast. The new High and Woodruff Arts campus creates a ?Village for the Arts? where visitors can experience the finest art, music and theatre in the city.
After 25 years of service and with the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games approaching, the Arts Center sought a different use for the space and hired the design team of Thompson Ventulett and Stainback of Atlanta who “proposed transforming the parking deck into a ?Commons? area with benches, contemporary lighting and lush landscaping. Their objective was to create an urban garden where visitors to the Arts enter complex could enjoy the area for receptions, meetings and outdoor entertainment.
“The Sarnafil System included a heavy duty geotextile leveling layer installed directly on the concrete deck, a 79 mil thick, reinforced, thermoplastic waterproofing membrane – G476 with integral membrane flashings, a protection layer of tough high density polyethylene and a composite drainage panel – Sarnafil 900. In addition to the standard membrane flashings, Williamson and Associates also designed a series of fully adhered membrane grid strips at the deck perimeter and around penetrations
including the numerous columns and planters. The grid strips act as sub-membrane waterstops at critical areas to restrict potential water migration,” (Sika Sarnafil case study).
Parking for all Woodruff Arts Center events is available at the state-of the-art Parking Garage located on Arts Center Way, Colony Square, as well as the Promenade building on 15th Street.
