Seattle Center, the historic campus of the 1962 World?s Fair, is now a regional visitor attraction hosting a variety of large-scale events and festivals throughout the year. Until the summer of 2008 most visitors parked in surface parking lots, the largest of which was 12 acres. In 2005, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation purchased this 12-acre lot as the site for their campus. As part of the sale, Seattle Center and the Foundation agreed to replace the surface parking with a new parking garage," (Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd, see below). "Green building features include a living roof on the parking garage and a million-gallon rainwater storage tank to reduce water use. The project is aiming for a Gold rating in LEED Certification, an environmental building standard," (Heim, 2009).

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's new 900,000-square-foot headquarters is comprised of two six-story, boomerang-shaped buildings on 12 acres near the Seattle Center, and is scheduled to be finished in April 2011 at an estimated cost of $500 million.
