On February 16, 2009 the Seattle Department of Transportation celebrated the first year of operations of its Seattle Streetcar. Department officials said they are pleased with its choice for a ?green? roof on top of the 10,000 square foot maintenance facility, which is part of the 1.5-mile South Lake Union Line. The maintenance facility is located at 318 Fairview Ave. North in a changing mixed use neighborhood. Ethan Melone, rail transit manager at the Seattle Department of Transportation, said it is the goal of the city of Seattle and private developers to highlight sustainability. Examples of the city?s environmentally friendly practices include: green roofs and bio-swales, sustainable urban design, and effective transit systems to connect neighborhoods.
?A green roof on the maintenance facility was a nice way to highlight these efforts,? he said. "It also saved some costs for the on-site storm water detention facilities that would have otherwise been required, and it is a good neighbor to the adjacent mid-rise apartment building that overlooks our facility.? |

Melone noted that no additional structural requirements were needed to add the 5,000 square feet of ?green? roof space. He said the lightweight tray system that Columbia Green Technologies, Inc. offered allowed the transportation department to retain its economical structural design. Columbia Green Technologies Founder Mark Carpenter said his AVRS? system is unique among its competitors in its cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
?We are pleased the Seattle Department of Transportation chose our patented interlocking tray system, which is the most innovative technology in green roofs,? Carpenter said. ?The AVRS product is unique in that it becomes an integral part of the entire building structure.? |
