The new Riedel-Baustoff-Recyling office )also known as UFO), was constructed from the steel framework of an old CEBIT exhibition stand, re-decked in timber recycled from building demolition, then waterproofed with a single ply membrane. To protect the single ply membrane, and in keeping with the recycling concept, a green roof was installed using only recycled materials (substrate as well as drainage elements are made from recycled materials). The green roof was subsidised by the Nordrhein-Westfalen state authority once the green roof’s drainage coefficient was proven to conform to the “Wasserrundbrief No. 4” (Drainage Norm No. 4) of < 0.3. At a slope of 45 degrees, the construction of the perimeter edge proved to be challenging. ZinCo's Fallnet SK system was installed on flat roof areas to provide anchor points for maintenance workers. The excess rainwater drains through the Eaves Profile DP 120-E into the gutter. Sedum mats have been installed on the growing medium at the perimeters giving immediate ground cover to this vulnerable area. The vegetation coverage is slower as Sedum shoots were sown over the central area of the roof.
