Located in the heart of Baltimore?s historic Canton District is one of the city?s most unique?and environmentally preferable?renovation projects, Brewer?s Hill. The 735,000 square foot facility once housed two famous breweries. Today it is a multi-use building with offices, shops, and plans for a major restaurant on taps. It is also one of the first projects to apply for Maryland?s Green Building Tax Credit. ?For this tax credit, facilities must meet the requirements of LEED Silver certification,? says Julia Craighill, with Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, the project developers. ?So we incorporated [various] technologies to make the facility Greener, energy efficient, and sustainable.?

The green roof on the Natty Boh Tower at Brewer’s Hill is an integral part of the green design elements for this historic renovation by Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, Inc. In fact, the project is the first to be accepted into the Maryland Green Building Tax Credit Program. The green roof will offer natural views for tenants on multiple levels. It will also significantly help stormwater management and promote increased energy efficiency in the building, which is located blocks from Baltimore?s Inner Harbor.

One technology involved the roof?a modular green roof manufactured by GreenGrid?. ?Not only did it help us meet LEED Silver requirements,? Craighill says, ?the modular system has other benefits like simplifying service and repair to the existing roof.? The extensive green roof was designed by Cho Benn Holback + Associates and features blanket coverage of six different roof areas. A total of 13 different sedum species were planted randomly to achieve a ?meadow-like? effect when grown out. Approximately 60% of the species chosen maintain winter interest. Some are also taller, providing vertical visual interest.
