Set to open in 2019, developer Tamdeen Group’s new 215,000 sf 360 MALL Extension will include a 5-star luxury, 261-room Grand Hyatt Hotel, new shops, and daylighting, trees & water features, a Tennis Academy, and the 7,600-seat Sheikh Jaber Al Abdullah Al Jaber Al Sabah International Tennis Complex. The new development will uniquely combine retail, sports, hospitality and entertainment facilities in Kuwait’s South Surra district.

Designed by CallisonRTKL, the architects who created the iconic circular 360 MALL, the International Tennis Complex will have indoor and outdoor tennis courts and the new building will include daylighting, spacious interior landscaping water features, and a lush Vertical Garden by French botanist Patrick Blanc.

The 350 m-long and 7 m-high indoor Le Mur Vegetal hydroponic vertical garden circle is slated to be one of the longest greenwalls ever. With wall openings excluded, the approximate area of vegetation will be 1550 m2.

“Our design team’s strategy employs water features, trees, semi-open spaces and multiple view corridors to create an environment that can deliver the kind of psychologically soothing and calming effects of nature that have been proven to draw shoppers into stores, lengthen dwell time and boost sales. These key elements also resonate within the local context; in Islamic culture, flowing water, shade and exuberant foliage are symbols used to convey ideas of both spiritual and physical refreshment.

“The vertical configuration allows for a higher volume of plantings within a smaller space. 360 Mall’s living wall is composed of over 101 different species of plants, with each square meter of the wall hosting 33 individual plants.” (O’Grady, 2016).

“The Grand Hyatt Kuwait will sit at the heart of the expansion. Set in a modern oval-shaped, glass-clad structure, it will feature four restaurants and bars, events space catering for government meetings, and a range of sport and leisure facilities which Hyatt said will attract both business and leisure travellers from across the region,” (Megson, 2015)

In addition to being open to Hyatt guests, the facilities will also be used by the Kuwait Tennis Federation. Both the Grand Hyatt Hotel and the Sheikh Jaber Al Abdullah Al Jaber Al Sabah International Tennis Complex are expected to open in 2020.
