Two living walls of cascading, soft tropical plants, floor-to-ceiling windows and clean, white subway tile set the stage for Brome Burgers & Shakes. The fresh-causal restaurant, open since fall 2015, offers 100 percent organic, grass-fed beef burgers and other creative American cuisine. In fact, Brome Burgers is named for a type of hay grown in the west for animal feed.

Set in downtown Dearborn, Michigan on bustling Michigan Avenue among shops, bars and eateries, Brome Burgers & Shakes brings a much-needed option to metro Detroit: American cuisine sourced right and done right. Focusing on one of the U.S.’ favorite foods — hamburgers — founder Sam Abbas proposed to make them and other items on the menu with higher-quality ingredients. With all 10 burgers on the menu (seven beef plus fish, chicken and veggie options) all priced around $10, Brome is the place to get an ethically sourced, creatively prepared, and a simply delicious meal for a reasonable price.

Brome Burgers & Shakes pledges sustainable business practices that increase efficiency and reduce waste. Additional sustainable materials are evident as well. For example, shelves are made from wood that was pulled from the Dearborn railroads when the Dearborn Amtrak Station was being renovated and interior designers Hallarsan Group preserved the over 250-year old cedar trusses from the original 15-foot-high ceilings. When initially installed, the trusses were already 150 years old.

At Brome Burgers & Shakes, the two interior LiveWall® green walls bring a sense of the outdoors indoors.

“The green walls took a plain surface and brought it to life,” said Sam Abbas. “The green walls make the restaurant more inviting while expressing our commitment to sustainability.”

“The green walls propel our brand forward,” he said. “They create an atmosphere in which it becomes more than serving and enjoying great burgers and shakes but also about making a positive impact on everyone’s lives.”

Completed in June 2015, the Brome green wall installation has two sections, each 16 feet long and 9 feet 10 inches high. In total, there are 168 16″ sage-colored LiveWall modular planters with integrated irrigation and a mix of six tropical plants including Pothos, ‘Devil’s Ivy’ (Epipremnum aureum), ‘Bishop’s Hat’ (Epimedium, aka barrenwort), and Red Wandering Jew (Tradescantia zebrina ‘Red’).

Bell’s Landscape Services, Inc., which has provided commercial and residential landscape construction and maintenance for more than 38 years, recommended, sold, installed, and maintains the green walls. The project earned them a Gold Award for Creative Landscape – Green Initiatives from the Michigan Green Industry Association.

“We got into green walls as a new line of business,” said Marcy Bell, Brome Burgers & Shakes president. “We see a lot of potential in exterior and interior green walls.”

“Marcy reviewed system options,” said Mike Bell, sales director. “LiveWall stood out as better designed and engineered and more conducive to plant growth and health.”

The living walls of cooling green and reddish plants are front and center within the airy, publicly accessible dining room and highly visible throughout the restaurant.

Brome Burgers & Shakes is growing to ten locations in Michigan and may expand into Chicago. According to founder Abbas, all locations will feature green walls.
