Named after the community that it serves, Morrell Park Community Center opened on Monday, July 28, 2014 as Baltimore’s gift to a disadvantaged neighborhood. It is the first new recreation center built in the City of Baltimore in the last 10 years. Most of the current recreation centers were built in the late 60s and early 70s. Construction on the project started in 2012.

The project was constructed at a cost of $4.1 million and it delivered a beautiful “green” certified building, with an opulent Greenroof Roofscapes vegetated roof, which insulates, captures rain water and greatly reduces storm water runoff to an adjoining creek.

The Morrell Park Community Center features a gymnasium, fitness room, multi-purpose room, large patio, and outdoor green space affording the community local access to new activities, new choices and new hope. It currently offers summer camp, juvenile and senior programs.

The installation contractor was RCS, LLC, with project manager Joe Gretchen. The Barrett Company’s Greenroof-Roofscapes'” design included their Ram Tough 250DM hot rubberized asphalt waterproofing membrane over Securock and a steel deck with Barrett’s root barrier, water retention and drainage device, PolyFelt filter fabric and erosion control mat components.

The media was provided by Stancills and the vegetation by Ed Snodgrass at Emory Knoll Farms. Electric Field Vectoring services were provided by the Honza Group. The complete system is covered under Barrett Company’s warranty. While the greenroof measures 9,500 square feet, the total roof area is 12,000 square feet.
