The $46,000,00 Richard J. Lacks, Sr. Cancer Center is the only dedicated comprehensive cancer center in western Michigan, supporting all components of cancer care, including inpatient and outpatient care and traditional and complementary therapies. The Lacks Cancer Center received LEED certification in January 2006. At the time it was the second hospital and only the third healthcare facility in the nation to receive this distinction. It was the first LEED certified hospital in the state of Michigan.

Mercy Health Lacks Cancer Center awards include: 2006 Award of Excellence‑GREEN Building, Associated Builders & Contractors; 2005 Award of Excellence‑Institution Construction over $20 million, Associated Builders & Contractors; 2005 Excellence in Design Award Winner, Environmental Design and Construction.
"A green roof covers two-thirds of the project. This roof provides sanctuary for patients, family members, and staff while reducing stormwater runoff, noise pollution, and the project's contribution to the urban heat-island effect. It also provides habitat for wildlife and reduces the building's cooling load," (BuildingGreen.com).
