Franklin & Marshall is a residential undergraduate liberal arts college located in historic Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1787 with a gift of 200 British pounds from Benjamin Franklin. Franklin & Marshall College is committed to serve as a leader in building a sustainable world and in October 2012, the College Board of Trustees formally adopted a Sustainability Master Plan, affirming a pledge to build and enhance a sustainable environment and setting goals that incorporate sustainability into decision-making at every level and in every facet of the College.

When the roof on Franklin and Marshall College's Schnader Hall needed to be replaced, the decision was made to invest in the future and add a green roof to the newly finished roof. Completed in June 2011 by Green Roof Technology, the roof features an extensive green roof with a granular drainage layer.
Schnader Hall’s rooftop recently became the College's fifth. "The “green” roof of the Wohlsen Center for the Sustainable Environment is full of color on a recent summer morning. One of five green roofs on the Franklin & Marshall campus, it includes several different varieties of sedums, such as Angelina, Fuldaglut, Tricolor and Weihenstephaner Gold. Green roofs reduce the energy required to cool and heat buildings, and retain water to decrease runoff during rainstorms. The roof of Bonchek College House, above, was the first roof on the F&M campus to “go green.” The sedums are similar to those found on the Wohlsen Center, although here they exist in trays. Brooks and Weis College Houses also have green roofs," (Franklin and Marshall College website, see below).
