|Sebert Landscaping's corporate office was designed to be both a state-of-the-art green building and demonstration for clients and allied professionals. A green roof, along with permeable pavers, native plantings and a water feature that helps manage stormwater, are among the award-winning landscape elements recognized for sustainable construction by the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association. |
Completed on September 10, 2010, the green roof has contributed to a significant reduction in energy use by the building, which is certified LEED Gold. Natural gas and electricity consumption of the 29,000-square-foot facility, including a fleet center, is comparable to that of the roughly 7,000 square feet of space the company occupied previously.
A $50,000 grant stemming from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, helped make the green roof possible.
Sebert regularly conducts tours of its green building, including the green roof, for prospective clients, allied professionals and special-interest groups by appointment. In 2013 the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) recognized Sebert Landscaping with a Sustainable Company Award, and Lawn & Landscape magazine honored Sebert with an Environmental Business Award in the category of Most Innovative Use of Technology.
|The rooftop includes a patio area with wood decking, made of reclaimed wood, and furnishings. A pergola and lush planters provide a sense of enclosure.|
Beyond the patio is the passive portion of the rooftop, incorporating a LiveRoof modular system, whose pre-grown plants provided instant color and texture. It uses four-inch trays of Allium and Sedum, and six-inch trays of grasses, which together detain roughly 1,500 gallons of water in a one-inch rainfall.
The view from the green roof on the Sebert corporate headquarters includes a 33.3 KW PV system installed on the company's adjacent fleet center. The solar panels generate about a third of the electricity used by the corporate office. Thanks to nearly $200,000 in a federal grant, and state and federal tax incentives, the payback on Sebert's investment in the panels will be roughly five years.
