One of the Living Classrooms Foundation’s unique and challenging learning facilities include the Mikulski Workforce Development Center, located at their East Harbor Campus in the Fells Point section of Baltimore. “Built by Project SERVE members, the Mikulski Workforce Development Center is a community-based center featuring flexible education and multipurpose space and offices for the Foundation’s programs serving at-rish youth and the under-employed in the East Baltimore Empowerment Zone and surrounding counties.

Each phase of construction of the Mikulski Workforce Development Center provided valuable on-the-job training and experience for participants of the Project SERVE program. Project SERVE members contributed to the building’s construction from start to finish as part of their job skill and service training. Their skill and hard work, as well as the commitment of their experienced job skill teacher, provided the majority of the labor in this project and gives Living Classrooms Foundation a permanent source of pride for their efforts within the community,” (Living Classrooms website).

Planted in May, 2004, the Mikulski Workforce Development Center was the first waterfront building in Baltimore City to have a greenroof which will help reduce runoff into the Chesapeake Bay and become part of the Living Classrooms environmental curriculum. The Center was named after U. S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, an advocate for Baltimore and especially Fell’s Point.
