The new NOAA La Jolla Laboratory Replacement Project at UC San Diego will replace the existing NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service?s Southwest Fisheries Science Center. "The NOAA La Jolla Laboratory Replacement Project will be located on an undeveloped 3.3 acres site located in the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) neighborhood of the University of California at San Diego campus. The new facility will replace the existing NOAA Southwest Science Center (NOAA) whose site is experiencing significant coastal bluff erosion. The new site is located directly opposite the existing NOAA facility across La Jolla Shores Drive.

"The project design is a single building comprised of five levels terracing into the steeply sloped site to create the lowest profile possible to maintain views from the provide La Jolla Shores Drive view corridor. Four levels are above ground with one level of underground parking. building is built into hillside. The roof is treated as an exterior elevation with sustainable green roof and photovoltaic panels.

"The project will achieve a minimum USGBC LEED Silver rating. The project proposes a groundbreaking of March 2010 and is estimated to be completed for a Spring 2012 occupancy," (Regents Committee on Grounds and Buildings, 2009, see below).
