| The roof garden at St. Hilda's College Residence located at the University of Toronto, Trinity College, provides a leafy sanctuary for busy students and staff (total of 2,000 sf, about 1,300 sf vegetated). Completed in the summer of 2008 on top of Cartwright Hall, it provides insulation, cooling the building in the sweltering Toronto summers. Structurally, the building was capable of taking the weight of the engineered soil and vegetation, and since the roof was in need of repairs anyway, the Student Capital Campaign Committee pledged $50,000 in student funds toward the project (CitiesAlive!, 2009). At the alumni Spring Reunion in 2008, they collected a matching $50,000 (Seaborn, 2010). |
