As the owner/designer, I can say my client’s first and foremost concern was the environment. Living in such a large city every bit of greenspace is important for our environment and for our communities. The building structure is a newly renovated single family residence. The idea of the greenroof/ greenwall was to help reduce the consumption of energy from the buildings needs. The rooftop is now accessible for leisure and enjoyment. Pathways and a landing deck were constructed and installed for the client’s personal use and entertainment!
For this extensive greenroof we used select sedums from non other then Ed Snodgrass at Emory Knoll Farms, the material used was ordered and delivered by Hydrotech. The greenroof ammendments were selected and mixed by Skyland USA, LLC & delivered and systematically pumped to roof by River Valley Landscapes. The whole project was designed and installed by The Organic Gardener. The building is 35′ tall, with an additional 150 sf office that rests 10′ above the building structure. Our biggest challenge was fabricating an aluminum trellis fastened to the building’s wall to let vines create a living greenwall around solar windows. The construction of the project took 2.5 weeks to install, after a month of drawing and locating material needs. The project was completed on June 25, 2007.
