Green Roofs: A Sustainable Strategy, online course for CEU's - Source: Dennis Yanez. American Hydrotech is offering a free online continuing education course on green roofs for the architectural community: Green Roofs: A Sustainable Strategy. The course allows architects to earn one AIA/CES Learning Unit, including one hour of health, safety and welfare credit. In addition to AIA, the following organizations, among others, have also certified this course and will give their members credit upon completion: CSI, ASLA, RCI.

Topics include sustainable design, waterproof product specification, and proper installation techniques for use by building professionals in designing and waterproofing roof decks, plazas, vertical foundations, reflecting pools, and green roof applications. April 30 - May 25: WBK International Green Roof Course, ZHAW in Waedenswil (Campus Gruental) with excursions to various regions of Switzerland The International Green Roof Course is for those interested in all aspects of the green roof world from the perspectives of practice, research, urban planning, policy and design. Participants in this course will learn about installation, technical specifications, green roof systems, flora/fauna relationships and urban ecology. The course will be taught as a series of online and practical field modules as well as lessons in class rooms. The online Foundation Module starting in April will prepare participants for the Field Modules and lessons held in Switzerland in May. There are four Field Modules which will include lectures, design workshops as well as exclusive excursions to many renowned green roofs in the area. May 31-June 1: Practical Applications for Green Roofs and Green Walls, University of CA, Davis Interest in green roofs and green walls is growing, and designers are increasingly incorporating them into their projects to reduce storm water runoff, improve energy efficiency, gain LEED points and create habitat. The benefits of green roofs and walls are well documented and easily understood, but how do you actually build them, and what components and materials are needed to get the job done? Learn the basics of green roof and green wall design, from material and vendor selection to plant and growing medium considerations. Examine green roof and green wall systems for an in-depth understanding of the components and products utilized, as well as the applicable terminology. Construction details, specifications, growing medium blends and plant lists from real projects will provide you with practical knowledge that can be used at the drafting table and out in the field. Participate in hands-on activities to help build a living structure and walk away with a thorough understanding of the major design principles, products and tools to create a green roof or green wall. Instructor: Haven Kiers, M.L.A., works part time as an instructor for the nonprofit organization Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. She has a green roof consulting firm in Davis, Calif., and is currently designing the green roof for a residential property in San Francisco. Kiers is also the design editor for Greenroofs.com. June 16: Vegetated Roof Plantings Workshop, Nelson, BC, Canada Cascadia is providing public education about natural and green building methods through a series of introductory seminars co-sponsored by the Kootenay Association of Science and Technology (KAST), weekend workshops held throughout the construction, and an open house planned for September 2012.
