Milwaukee, WI, (October 26, 2009) – FJA Christiansen, A Tecta America Company, announces it will install a green roof with photovoltaic panels on the Milwaukee Public Library’s historic Central Library located at 814 West Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Tecta’s FJA Christiansen was chosen through a competitive bid process by the City of Milwaukee for the library project. Tecta joins HGA Architectural Firm, another leader in green design, to work on this sustainable project.

The Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) will not only see value and garner the benefits of a smaller carbon footprint, it will also see increased savings due to lower electricity, energy, heating and cooling costs.
“This is a proactive way in which Milwaukee is moving further into the green building arena and we are thrilled to be a part of it,” said Charlie Schulz, Project Manager.

Construction on the project began in late August with an estimated completion time of late Fall 2009, weather permitting. The 32,000 square foot green roof will feature 27,000 square feet of vegetation as well as solar panels.

Solar technology on the roof will feature crystalline panels, which are rack-mounted, and will produce an estimated 40,277 kw A/C of energy. On the green side the roof will also boast native plants and an educational viewing deck for the public.

Built in 1898, MPL’s Central Library displays French and Italian Renaissance architectural styles, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Several additions help comprise the block-long building that stands today.

The awarded contract is worth $1,088,000 with 18% being awarded to minority businesses of the greater Milwaukee area. 25% of the workforce will come from surrounding Milwaukee neighborhoods.
