'Tecta America Announces Sustainable Operating Unit of the Year Award' FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Skokie, Ill., - April 22, 2010 - Tecta America, the nation’s largest roofing company announces that its Minneapolis unit, Stock Roofing, has won the Tecta America Sustainable Operating Unit of the Year Award. A company-wide initiative which included 47 operating units vying for the title, this is the first year the award has been presented and included an across-the-board assessment of all environmental practices in determining a winner. In addition to its other qualifications for top honors, Stock also installed the green roof on the Target Center last year. Tecta America Magco Inc., located outside of Baltimore, took honorable mention. “We bid and work on squares and acres of roofing across the country every day, and we recognize our large impact on the environment, our ‘Roof Print,”’ said Tecta Green Roof Manager, Angie Durhman. “Our goal was to evaluate job site and office settings related to environmental stewardship and cost savings.” The challenge allowed Tecta to collect baseline data and find ways to evaluate and make improvements where it mattered most -- on their bottom line. Tecta began the challenge by sending weekly sustainable tips via email, which could be easily implemented within each operating unit. Tecta then developed a sustainability scorecard designed to be a snapshot of the operating unit’s performance as a whole, and began to calculate their environmental footprint. Member units that participated were ranked from categories of “doing a little something” to “Lean Green Machine” and more than 85% of the units participated in the challenge. More than half of Tecta’s operating units are making some sustainable strides, including job site recycling, scrap metal, office recycling, and offering Environmental Solutions (ES) to customers. Even more are “Walking the Talk” like Tecta America Sacramento Inc., which, in addition to documenting recycling efforts, has a dedicated sustainability coordinator, uses environmentally friendly marketing materials, categorically tracks ES bids and jobs, offers ES value to every customer, and has sold at least 5% revenue on ES. Outstanding operating units also have ES roofs, LEED AP, consistently sell 5% revenue on ES, and have sought innovation points in local recycling efforts, job site recycling, sustainable landscaping, programmable thermostats, carpooling, use of ES webinars, and light sensors throughout the building, among other sustainable efforts. “The scores were extremely close,” said Durhman. “It was our first year of collecting this information, and we hope the scorecard will serve as a benchmark to achieve higher goals for our units next year.” ### About Tecta America Now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, Tecta America, headquartered in Skokie, IL, is the largest commercial roofing company in the U.S., and provides roofing solutions nationwide with 47 locations and more than 3,000 employees.
