“NBC’s TODAY Show is scheduled to celebrate Earth Day, Monday, April 22, by building six green living walls on Rockefeller Plaza with local students from Bronx public schools. The segment will highlight the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council and the Center’s flagship event, the Green Apple Day of Service.

Rachel Gutter, the director of the Center for Green Schools at USGBC, along with Green Apple ambassador and Bronx educator Stephen Ritz* and students from his dynamic community program, the Green Bronx Machine, will join TODAY Show hosts Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker and Natalie Morales, along with celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis and others, to build the walls and participate in Earth Day activities throughout the morning.” ~ The Center for Green Schools at USGBC Scheduled to Help NBC’s TODAY Show Celebrate Earth Day on April 22 by Marisa Long of April 17, 2013

The TODAY Show recently filmed Steve Ritz and crew of the Bronx Machine at the Urban Garden Center LLC, photo above and below.

Sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), watch it at home or you can also join the TODAY show crew in New York City on April 22 to watch the segment live during the 8 and 9 a.m. hours of the show.  The first guests will receive Green Apple t-shirts to show their support.  The organizers say to please arrive at Rockefeller Center before 7 a.m. for best viewing.

Whether you’re there in person or watching it on TV, make sure to get a closer look at the success of vertical farms and the Mobile Edible Wall Unit (MEWU) in schools featuring local students and 6 – 12′ high vertical walls, each one more spectacular than the next!

Also join Giada De Laurentiis with “Off the Wall Cooking” using the GLTi vertical herb wall for freshness you cannot get anywhere else.  From Wall to Table!

In 2010 George Irwin, CEO of GLTi – and our own “Green Wall Editor” here on Greenroofs.com – was asked to design a greenwall for NBC’s “Green is Universal” week, along with Graham Stanley of Walls of Green, and he collaborated with Steve Ritz and Discovery High School students to create beautiful examples for display at the NBC Experience Store.

George says:

“What an honor and privilege to be asked back for Earth Day.  Tune in on April 22!  This is a testament to the success of our ability to engage students.  Visit our education link and view the video GLT Featured on NBC from November 18, 2010.” ~ George Irwin

If you can’t make it live, don’t forget to set your DVRs for April 22 at 8 a.m. EDT!

Hooray for NBC, the USBGC (I’m a LEED AP), the Green Bronx Machine and GLTi!

“The green roofs and walls on this tour provide excellent examples of integrated design that improve the quality of life for inhabitants of the building and for the surrounding community. One of the more important features of a green roof or wall is its ability to enhance other sustainable features. From providing food and biodiversity in an urban setting, to enhancing a building’s air quality and improving on-site sustainable energy production, green roofs and walls provide dynamic and aesthetically pleasing components to green buildings. These projects are all uniquely Canadian through their location (both interior and exterior) and a hardy plant selection, as well as their functions and required maintenance through the various seasons of Toronto.” ~ Greenbuild
