Greenroof Project of the Week for July 29, 2013: Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility

July 30, 2013 at 9:04 am Project of the Week: 7/29/13

Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility
Petaluma, CA, USA

12,174 sf. Greenroof

Project Description & Details

The Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility has two buildings that were designed with extensive living roofs, incorporated into the facility’s design program to demonstrate the viability of this technology toward promoting environmental sustainability. After conducting an assessment report in 2011, SYMBIOS was hired and initiated a complete overhaul of the initial 2009 roof system.

Using a Tremco system, a planting plan was developed with sweeping fields of 13 succulent species to create an impression of flowing movement that follows the main axis of the building. The roofs are irrigated directly by utilizing the tertiary treated wastewater from the facility’s operations. In the western United States where seasonal drought is an annual event this green roof project clearly demonstrates the appropriate use of this reclaimed water resource. In order to meet a net zero runoff requirement goal for the project, the living roof was integrated with a series of ground level bioswales and rain gardens.

Greenroof Project of the Week for April 15, 2013: Hugh Garner Housing Co-operative

April 16, 2013 at 10:04 pm  Project of the Week: 4/15/13

Hugh Garner Housing Co-operative
Toronto, Canada

Project Description & Details

The Hugh Garner Housing Co-operative, built in 1983, is located in the historic Cabbagetown/St. James Town area of downtown Toronto, and occupies the equivalent of a city block. The roof membrane was scheduled for replacement in 2003 and the Green Roof Committee, with the backing of the Board of Directors and Membership, took it upon themselves to further the goals of the Co-op by instigating the green roof project.

Extensive green roofs are planned for the North and Pavilion roofs, with an intensive roof garden on the South Roof. The South Roof provides amenity space with a design that mimics a rural, park-like setting. Barrier free paths lead to intimate seating areas and a raised gazebo provides shade. The garden was designed by Monica Kuhn Architect, MOSS SUND, and Gardens in the Sky with the security of the users in mind. A wide variety of planting including native trees, shrubs and perennials add visual interest, while the ‘stream’ feature ties the space together. Roofing was provided by Tremco with Flynn Canada as the General Contractor.

Thank you to Tremco Incorporated for their Rare Earth Sponsorship of the just finished Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 – we appreciate your vision and continued support!
