Project Description & Details

Starting in 2008 with completion in 2012, AS. Architecture-Studio designed and oversaw the construction of two new buildings and restoration of an existing building for the Zhonghua Tobacco Factory, also known as the Shanghai Tobacco Factory, which manufactures luxury cigarettes. Located in the Yangpu District near the Huangpu River in Shanghai, the urban, architectural, and landscape redevelopment of the 106,500 m² site sought to integrate large industrial buildings within a highly urbanized area. A roof garden with a total area of about 8,000 square meters was desired by the client and installed alongside exhaust pipes, cooling towers, and other industrial elements on the roof.

Due to roof construction constraints in addition to summer temperatures over 50 degrees C (122 degrees F), the Modular Greening Unit from Shenzhen Green Ark Technology Co was specified, which can also store rainwater. A variety of grasses, flowers, vegetables, shrubs, and small trees were planted in a substrate thickness of 35 cm. The colorful shrubs and tall fescue were designed with an interval collocation for tone, in a French romantic style; a sprinkler irrigation system waters the plants once per week. Because of the special features of the building, the insulation layer has a thickness of 50 cm, a waterproofing layer by Sika Sarnafil, and floor tiles cover the remaining area. Taking into account the needs of the plant growth according to the thickness of the matrix, two types of modules were used at 30 cm and 35 cm high. The roof greening project took only 48 days to be completed and AS. Architecture-Studio says “the new buildings fit perfectly into their environment and provide good thermal insulation and reduce energy consumption.” Six months after its completion, colorful, lush plants were blowing in the breeze as a wave travels up and down, as beautiful as a painting.

Project Description & Details

Designed by VMDO Architects with Siteworks Studio, the walkout terrace located on the 5th floor of the Pollak Building Visual Arts Building at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) serves as a living classroom and provides for an opportunity for the students and faculty to congregate outside. With Roofmeadow as greenroof consultant and Wayne’s Wholesale Nursery supplying the plants, the roof illustrates three different types of green roof planting strategies and depths with conventional (3-4″), meadow (6″), and plants native (12″) to Virginia – the first such green roof in the Commonwealth.

Installed by Capitol Greenroofs, the assembly utilizes a Carlisle Garden Roof with Optigreen drainage and growing media, provided by Conservation Technology, over an IRMA roof.  Students from the VCU School of the Arts Department of Interior Design spent a day planting the perennials, grasses and succulents. Corten steel planters were placed randomly in the planting areas. Galvanized grating leads to a new handicap accessible entrance and a 1,500 sf Pennsylvania bluestone patio flanks either side of the grating. VCU installed a 16 foot tall Eddy GT, 1 kW vertical axis wind turbine on the top of the southeast stair tower on the Pollak Building in the spring of 2012 which can be seen from the greenroof.

Project Description & Details

North America’s first fully digital hospital, Humber River Hospital is a lean, green and digital showcase facility with some of the latest medical technology available today integrated throughout to support excellence in care. The facility serves a catchment area of more than 850,000 people in the northwest Greater Toronto Area and the new 1.7 million square foot facility, designed by HDR, Inc. opened in October 2015 and operates 656 beds in 2015/2016, with capacity to expand to 722 beds by 2025/2026. Committed to achieving LEED® Silver certification and tracking LEED Gold, one of the many impressive features in the new Humber River Hospital is the 13,192 square meters of green roofing, visible from a majority of the patient rooms and treatment areas of the hospital. In addition, the gigantic art installations on the north and south facades, titled “Aspen Grove,” are glass murals that recall a colorful woodland scene, representing the harmonization of the hospital with the local community.

Flynn Canada crews completed 140,000 square feet of LiveRoof green roofs spanning over 17 different levels, compiled of 4 inch LiveRoof tray systems. With planting designed by Terry McGlade of Flynn Canada and Kees Govers of LiveRoof Ontario, it was comprised of sedums and perennials, specifically shade-orientated perennials such as Hostas and Bergenia, and grasses and chives for sun areas intermixed with sedum varieties. Planting was designed as sustainable as possible to LEED Sites standards with no potable water to be used in future years. The project was delivered under Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Finance and Procurement program, where the public and private sectors join forces to provide needed infrastructure for communities. By providing natural beauty and function, the Humber River Hospital green roof contributes to the new healthcare facility’s overall focus on sustainability.

Project Description & Details

Nature had a calling to this 1250-sq ft rooftop terrace, part of a 1910 arts and crafts style home with modern additions located in Lawrence, New York. With direct roof access from the upper level bedroom, the design would incorporate beauty, function, and form, screening an unsightly generator and an AC condenser unit while softening an L-shaped, hard edged space. The clients sought a roof garden design that could shield the unsightly elements, and create a setting that could be used comfortably throughout the day and evening with living areas for dining and lounging. Modern forms and a living greenwall would bring an inviting design with visual play while giving the home updated roof appeal.

Gunn Landscape Architecture designed and incorporated a curvilinear living greenwall working with Plant Wall Design to engineer the overall structure. Reinterpreting the American meadow and giving it a vertical form for a rooftop, the greenwall incorporates gradients of green hues, herbaceous plant material, and predominantly native species from blooming perennials, ferns, and grasses to mildew resistant climbing varieties traversing diagonally along the curved form. As diverse textures flourish throughout spring, bright color extends from the varied green backdrop later in the season. The plants, growing in nutrient rich sediment without the weight of loam, are placed within felt pockets, designed to encourage minimal loss of water. The private greenwall serves as a striking focal point alongside consistent language in the architectural formwork, slats of wood running uniformly throughout the entire expanse. Accompanied by a living landscape of trees and shrubs on the perimeter, the outdoor sanctuary provides residents with a pleasant new enclave and a solution-oriented design that adds greenery without compromising floor space.
