Hotel Santo Domingo Hanging Garden
Madrid, Spain

HotelSantoDomingoHangingGarden1

Project Description & Details

Located in the heart of Madrid, the Hotel Santo Domingo is a comfortable boutique 4 star hotel dedicated to artistic creation, designed to host all kinds of events and offer a full range of services. The proprietors decided to cover the barren interior courtyard walls since 70 out of its 200 rooms overlooked the bare space, but it was a challenge to create original, spectacular and stunning views. In line with the hotel owners’ artistic and ecological aesthetic, along with a desire to provide differentiation and added value to its customers, a spectacular living vertical garden was desired.

Designed by architect Félix González Vela, the beautiful inner courtyard showcases the world’s largest hanging garden (according to Guinness World Records as of November 23, 2011): an immense 1,026 m2 wall of greenery (including the vegetated terraced areas, 844 m² without) with an impressive 20 meter high waterfall. In total, more than 2,500 varieties of non-allergenic trees and shrubs, climbing plants and herbs highlighting seasonal species were used in 400 staggered planters of different sizes with about 40,000 liters of specially designed growing media. Eight trees reach 5 meters high and there are about 30 smaller shrubs; the vertical garden is estimated to absorb 25,000 kg of CO2 per year.

The hanging garden also has an advanced system of night lighting technology with LEDs that delight guests and visitors, offering a show of varying colors during day and nighttime. Inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the 22.9 meter high greenwall is one of the hotel’s masterpieces ensuring colorful year round vegetation.

Watch the “Phyto Kinetic: Gardens in Movement” by Marc Grañén from Our Virtual Summit 2013

December 11, 2014 at 11:03 am

In anticipation of Greenroofs.com’s spectacular 2015 Virtual Summit on April 6 through May 31 – and in order to familiarize you with the event – we are now making the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 videos publicly available on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube to all free of charge.

Today we have the pleasure to air the Individual Video “Phyto Kinetic: Gardens in Movement” by Marc Grañén.  He is actually our newest contributing editor here at Greenroofs.com, and I am in the middle of translating his first column – look for it very soon!  We will present it in both English and Spanish, the first time we publish an article in two languages.

PhytoKinteticBus

Marc says, “I have a real need to observe all that involves me, to capture the essence of each small part of a landscape, in order to understand the natural balance of Nature, that Nature we had already pushed out from our lives. So I created Phyto Kinetic, to gain those lost green spaces in where there’s only concrete and asphalt; a world trademark to “engarden” the roofs of public transport. Finally, we have started to have green roofs and vegetal walls; now we have also gardens in movement.” Marc’s presentation will be in English.

Marc Grañén says, “My artistic point of view of life and my intense love of natural landscapes make the perfect combination for what has become my daily occupation. I am a landscape artist. Nature is my inspiration and my family, my best teacher. We live in Bescanó, our small hometown in the northeast of Spain.” ~ VS2013

Video & Project of the Week for December 1, 2014: Plaza Delicias (Delicias Square) Vertical Garden

Plaza Delicias (Delicias Square) Vertical Garden
Zaragoza, Spain
14,316 sf. Green Façades & Greenwalls

PlazaDelicias1

Project Description & Details

A densely populated area in the city of Zaragoza, Delicias has a general lack of green space and symbolic landmark places. In the 1990’s the neighborhood residents’ association (Asociación de Vecinos de Delicias “Manuel Viola”) gathered support, including from the City of Zaragoza, to have a small unsightly corner vacant lot revitalized into a thriving hanging garden. The leisure and educational community gathering space also provides much needed vegetation.

Designed by Sicilia y Asociados Arquitectura and Jardinería Vela, the award winning Plaza Delicias (Delicias Square) Vertical Garden has flourished in the tight urban space. A vertical garden of 500 linear metres of different heights with various accesses and platforms was created offering a multitude of activities. Using 84 different plant species, over 800 m2 of landscaping elements were incorporated, in addition to 530 m2 of plants located at the Plaza Delicias street level. Rising to a height over 14.40 metres, the routes crisscross the plaza’s space as if they were tree branches sprouting out from the trunk, creating the symbolic neighborhood tree. Unique art has been incorporated within a striking vertical tower, and the entire constructed unit is presented as a unique whole interrelating architecture with naturalization.
