OrchardCentralMall1

Project Description & Details

Orchard Central Mall, situated at the junction of Orchard and Killiney Roads, is Singapore’s tallest and first vertical pure-retail mall, overcoming land area limitations with 11 storeys above ground and 2 basement levels. It boasts multiple outdoor viewing areas with a commanding view of Orchard Road, including three outdoor “green” balconies appealing to alfresco food & beverage outlets. The air-conditioned shopping street discovery walk and the rooftop garden are both accessible to the public 24 hours a day.

The rooftop garden, designed by acclaimed Japanese interior designer, Takashi Sugimato, features 3 large living walls and balcony rail on the 11th floor and 2 lower green walls on the 12th floor roof terrace. The landscape roof system, including the sub-soil drainage for the landscape roof garden and planter boxes, uses the VersiCell sub-soil drainage cells and the greenwalls consist of Vertical Greening Modules (VGM), both by Elmich. Orchard Central Mall is a winner of the Singapore Institute of Architects and National Parks Board’s Skyrise Greenery Awards in 2009.

CITYGREEN – Stepping Up with Green

August 5, 2013 at 1:24 pm

The latest issue of CITYGREEN on green roofs and walls has just been released.  Now in its seventh issue, the award-winning publication CITYGREEN is published by Singapore’s Centre for Urban Greenery & Ecology (CUGE).

CitygreenJuly2013

CITYGREEN is a biannual publication and winner of the APEX 2012 Awards for Publication Excellence as well as MPAS Awards 2012 Finalist, and covers topics on greening and ecology of the urban environment.

Through its cover story, research reports and other feature articles, the magazine updates its readers on a diversity of topics along the theme “Stepping Up with Green,” bringing forth the emerging trends in the field of skyrise greening across the world.

Unraveling New Possibilities In Advancement of Skyrise Greenery

In this issue, CITYGREEN unravels the new possibilities in the advancement of skyrise greenery. It rounds up a number of impressive project features.  Featured Writers for CITYGREEN issue 7 include Cornelia Oberlander, Marc Ottelé, Wong Mun Summ, Maureen Connelly and Paul Erlichman.

Locally within Singapore, the PARKROYAL on Pickering hotel and Jardin condominium go beyond extensive integration with the façade, to bring greenery into close interaction with users.

Internationally, the VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre demonstrates remarkable design of green roof deeply integrated with the building’s water conservation and treatment strategy, and innovative designs of commendable winners of the international Green Roof and Wall Awards of Excellence as well as Hong Kong’s Skyrise Greenery Awards in 2012.

Stepping Up with Green also shares the positive financial forecasts for the global green roof and green wall market. In Aditya Ranade’s report of the economic study, Lux Research forecasts a USD 680 million market by 2017 for green walls, suggesting a sure role for such landscape treatments in the future of cities.  By the way, Aditya Ranade was one of our keynotes at our Greenroofs & Walls of the World(TM) Virtual Summit 2013 – if you didn’t attend, you sure missed one exciting video!

In line with the growing market, more rigorous standards and testing of various green materials will prove essential. Marc Ottelé shares the findings of a life-cycle assessment conducted with collaborators to understand the cradle-to-grave environmental impacts of five different types of vertical greenery systems.

Institute of Technical Education HQ & College Central, Singapore
Singapore

57,307 sf. Greenwalls

Project Description & Details

The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) is a post-secondary institution in Singapore that provides pre-employment training to secondary school leavers as well as continuing education and training to working adults. ITE has incorporated environmental sustainability as one of the key strategic programmes under the new ITE INNOVATE Plan 2010 – 2015, which aims at instilling greater awareness among its stakeholders, embracing green practices and developing new competencies for the green economy.

ITE made a bold statement to embrace Singapore’s transformation into a ‘City in a Garden’ with green walls up to 35 m (115 feet) high covering the facades of eight campus blocks, together totaling 5,324 sq m (57,307 sq ft), making it the largest vertical greenery installation at a single development in the world. The living walls on the six-storey façades were established using the Elmich VGM® Green Wall System, comprising Vertical Greening Modules (VGM®) containing a geotextile bag filled with EnviroMix® GW, a primarily inorganic soil-less lightweight planting media, anchored onto stainless steel pilasters. The green walls form visually appealing living barriers that protect the west-facing walls of the campus blocks from the intense tropical sun which can reach temperatures as high as 38.0 °C (100.4 °F) in equatorial Singapore.

The Greenroofs.com 2012 Top 10 List of Hot Trends in Greenroof & Greenwall Design

November 20, 2012 at 3:04 pm

2012 has been a whirlwind year for an amazing assortment of spectacular living architecture projects, and Haven Kiers and I have taken notice.  Did you see our  October 16, 2012 Greenroofs.com Announces the “2012 Top 10 List of Hot Trends in Greenroof & Greenwall Design”  Press Release about it?

Here we go:

2012 marks the sixth year of our “Top 10 List of Hot Trends in Greenroof & Greenwall Design.”  Compiled by our Design Editor Haven Kiers, MLA, LEED AP, GRP and I, we have been proud to share the Top 10 List at the following conferences so far:

The 10th Annual CitiesAlive Green Roof & Wall Conference in Chicago, IL on October 17-20, 2012 and the  WGIN World Green Roof Conference 2012 (WGRC) in Hangzhou, China on October 22-26, 2012.

Next up is the International Green Conference 2012 in Bangalore, India on November 26-28, 2012, and, of course, we will be presenting it at our second  Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 on February 12 through March 13, 2013.  And for the Virtual Summit we will add a twist – a sneak peek into projects on our radar for the 2013 Top 10 List.  Haven and I always have a great time showing amazing examples of living architecture and will be available afterward for a live Q & A session – right from the convenience of your desktop, laptop or mobile device.

So, what’s it all about in 2012?

Starting with trends that we’ve seen in previous years that have either refused to go away or have sprung back with new vigor within the last year, we continue to see amazing integration of urban agriculture into new and existing structures, the use of vegetation to create soothing and healing gardens within hospital settings, and the design of schools that incorporate living architecture into their basic curriculum.  As always, we doff our caps to the fantastic skyscrapers that spiral up through the clouds and the client specific boutique greenroofs that defy categorization.

We are also excited to highlight new trends in green infrastructure.  This year, museums embraced their inner green goddesses and began highlighting living art both in and outside of their walls (and roofs).  Another rising trend features elevated walks.  Capturing everything from bridges, railways and promenades, this category features stunning expanses of elevated greenery.  And new this year, we’re incorporating two of the greenest cities in the world as categories in and of themselves, starting with tropical Singapore, a “herban” oasis that has started a green revolution on the island nation.

We culminate our Top 10 List of Hot Design Trends with a look at Chicago, an early trendsetter in city greening and now the definitive leader in living and green infrastructure and our #1 spot for 2012.

The Greenroofs.com Top 10 List of Hot Trends in Greenroof & Greenwall Design for 2012:

10) Client Specific “Boutique” Greenroofs
9) Green Museums: Art Living Inside & Out
8) Educational Facilities as Green Living Laboratories
7) Upward Spirals of Green
6) Hospitals Healing through Living Architecture
5) Gardens in the Clouds: Stacking & Stepping with Vegetation
4) Sky Farms on the (High)Rise
3) Singapore: A City within a Sky Garden
2) Green Elevated Walks: Bridges, Railways & Promenades
1) Chicago’s Trend-Setting Style: A “Miracle Mile High” City of Plants & Leadership

If you didn’t make it to one of the fabulous physical conferences listed above, please join us in January and February 2013 for our second annual Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 to experience first hand our fast-paced, lively, and presentation jam packed with awesome and sometimes incredible greenroof & greenwall photos of projects worldwide.

After the 2013 Virtual Summit, we will be happy, once again, to post our video of the 2012 Top 10 List of Hot Trends in Greenroof & Greenwall Design on our Top 10 page and on  greenroofsTV, our video channel on YouTube.

See you in Bangalore or at the Virtual Summit in 2013!
