Support Awesome Kickstarter Venture: Chris Wark, Our Energy Editor, Just Launched P-Pods by Ponix!

August 20, 2013 at 1:53 pm

Based in Manhattan, Christopher Wark has been‘s Energy Editor since 2010 (see his excellent column, including his seven-part series entitled “Cooler Than Cool Roofs: How Heat Doesn’t Move Through a Green Roof“).

After years of research, Chris and wife Wendy Amengual Wark have just launched their new venture, P-Pods by Ponix, on Kickstarter, and with only 16 days to go, they need our support!

They are looking for backers, both large AND small.  As you may know, Kickstarter promotes campaigns that have more backers, not more money pledged, so if they can get 100 people to pledge even $1.00, that would help get the campaign noticed.

So, what is a P-Pod?

P-Pods are mini-greenhouses that work in areas as small as 3 square feet!  The P-Pods’ versatile, portable design protect from wind, insulate and use less water.

“Ponix is proud to introduce the best environment for growing all kinds of herbs and vegetables in small outdoor spaces, especially where plants can be damaged by wind, storms, and pests. The concept design we developed is a rugged, compact plant pod that has been dubbed the “P-Pod” and will be easy to buy, easy to use, and easy to look at.

With P-Pods, you can stop paying big bucks for wilted herbs, Styrofoam strawberries, and past-due peppers. No matter how small – or large – your space and no matter what the weather, you can enjoy healthy, home-grown produce any time of year.” ~ Ponix Press Release

P-Pod prototypes #2 (right) and #3 (left)

P-Pods’ Features:

*  Low-profile design withstands high winds on balconies & roofs
*  Double-wall panels: excellent insulation and diffuse sunlight
*  Easy access: 2-way access panels – no swinging doors or lids
Protection from insects, birds, rodents and deer
For conventional, semi-hydroponic, & fully hydroponic gardening
Lightweight and portable: Easy to assemble – only 6 parts
 Optional thermostatically-controlled heated irrigation system

“A convenient configuration for balconies is the Duo.  It is made up of 2 P-Pods side-by-side with no wall between the individual P-Pods.  This allows more room for larger plants to spread out.  The greater volume also helps to keep all the enclosed plants warmer during cold weather.  There is no limit to the number of P-Pods that can be attached side-by-side.” ~ Chris Wark

Various sizes of P-Pods are available, including the Mini-Pod (base is 24 inches wide and 18 inches deep; the back is 24 inches) and the Midi-Pod (24 x 24 inches at the base and 36 inches high at the back) – available with an optional heated irrigation system for year-round growth – both part of the Kickstarter campaign:

NOTE:  The Mongo-Pod concept has a 3 ft x 3 ft tray and is 5 ft tall at the back.  Because it is wider than the Mini-Pod and Midi-Pod, they simply couldn’t fit it into this campaign.

Watch the fun and informative P-Pod video from Chris and Wendy Wark of Ponix:

Please visit the Ponix website,, to learn more about P-Pods and how they can be used to maximize the productivity and quality of your locally grown micro-garden.  See the FAQ’s here.

Urban rooftop growing just got a new player with P-Pods.  With hundreds of balconies, decks and terraces in the upper west side, the opportunities for growing fresh herbs and veggies are enormous within New York City alone!  In my humble opinion, every urban space in the world could benefit from a P-Pod or two, or more.

Whether you have a large company that believes this product could use your backing for commercial gardening, or are simply an individual who wishes to promote sincere, hard-working entrepreneurship while growing your own organic produce, please:

Back Chris Wark and the P-Pods on Kickstarter before September 5!

Aramis and I are proud to be supporters and backers, and we hope that you, too, can do the same by sharing this awesome opportunity with media and organizations interested in gardens, food, urban farming, micro-gardening and eco-roofs.

Happy greening in any kind of weather,

~ Linda V.
