Project of the Week Mini Description & Details

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation offers the opportunity to dramatically improve the quality of life for billions of people and its campus is a paragon of sustainable features. Designed by NBBJ Architects and completed in 2011, the multi-award winning Gates Foundation’s headquarters is the largest LEED-NC Platinum Certified nonprofit building in the world. Located across the street from the Seattle Space Needle, the former 12-acre asphalt parking lot had previously emptied its runoff into Puget Sound. But the design team including landscape architects Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN) created a stylish palette of mostly natives, including big leaf maples and edibles, along with drought tolerant non-natives. And, the campus features a total of two acres of extensive greenroofs, each with a five inch depth with plantings of sedum and sempervivum.

Completed first in 2008, most striking is the Seattle Center 5th Avenue North Parking Garage, with its 1.5 acre undulating living roof from American Hydrotech. The multifaceted structure is flooded with natural light and the high-vaulted roof is cut with a dramatic skylight. Working with NBBJ and GGN, Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company led the water resource management design, including a 100 percent non-potable irrigation system, water harvesting, subsurface drainage, green roofs, and soils engineering.

Rainwater is filtered by the greenroofs and directed from paved areas into a million-gallon cistern, currently harvesting 3.3 million gallons of rainwater a year. Conservation strategies reduce energy consumption by 39 percent via a solar array, thermal energy, and more. Potable water use is reduced by 79 percent through landscape features, rainwater storage, and the living roofs. This represents an upfront investment in the 100-year energy-efficient building that will pay for itself in fewer than 30 years. In addition to regenerating the surrounding downtown Seattle community, the ecologically and workplace-sensitive campus design has created a new world model for sustainable urban campuses.

Greenroofs.com Project Week August 14 2017 Millennium Park Chicago

When Millennium Park opened on July 16, 2004, it transformed an industrial wasteland into Chicago’s cutting-edge showplace – the centerpiece is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, a bandshell designed by Frank Gehry. Today, it is Chicago’s second-largest tourist attraction – and the City marked its 10th anniversary throughout the summer of 2014. The Millennium Park 10th Anniversary Summer Celebration featured dozens of free events and exhibitions including new monumental sculptures by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, designer of Crown Fountain; indie rock, electronica, jazz, classical and world music; films, simulcasts and documentaries shown on an outdoor, 40-foot LED screen; family activities; workouts and more. Due to the size, scope, and multi-phase approach, several companies provided waterproofing, including: Barrett CompanyAmerican Hydrotech, Tremco, and Henry.

909-Walnut2

Project Description & Details

Boasting twin-spires atop 35-stories, 909 Walnut is Missouri’s and the Midwest’s tallest residential building outside of Chicago. Built in 1930-31 as the Fidelity National Bank & Trust Building, the multi-award winning 909 Walnut is on the National Register of Historic Places. A historic update and makeover in the 2000s transformed the art-deco building to its original grand scale with 161 luxury condos, 90,000 square feet of commercial office space and with a 323-space attached, eight-story, gated garage. Designed by Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company (JBC), the top of the garage boasts a 16,000-square-foot award-winning rooftop garden with cabanas, trees, sod lawn, and seasonal greenery.

Envisioned as a secluded retreat for residents, JBC incorporated many green technologies to confront the inherent challenges of constructing green roof projects in the urban fabric. Special soil profiles, 6″ for lawn area and 8″ to 18″ for landscape beds, were specifically designed to meet the diverse needs of this demanding site. The site’s extensive use required considerable agronomic innovation to ensure sustainability of the landscape under heavy daily use by residents and pets. Professional testing services and consulting by Turf & Soil Diagnostics on the green roof ensured success. The roof garden captures 75% of annual rainfall for use by the plants which provides a lot of help with stormwater permitting. The 909 Walnut green roof has become an icon of Kansas City, frequently seen on banquet invitations, professional model shoots and educational sessions fueling an explosion of green roof construction in the region.

Watch “Introduction to Integrated Water Management” by Jeff Bruce from Our Virtual Summit 2013

January 15, 2015 at 3:08 pm

In anticipation of Greenroofs.com‘s spectacular 2015 Virtual Summit on April 6 through May 31 – and in order to familiarize you with the event – we are now making the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 videos publicly available on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube to all free of charge.

Today we have the pleasure to air “Introduction to Integrated Water Management” by Jeff Bruce, President of Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company and Chairman of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.

JeffBruce-NetZeroWaterCaseStudiesJeff will share basic technical and economic information on the design and performance of a fully integrated site and building water management system based on the “Net Zero Water” concept. Key concepts and terminology are illustrated by case studies and demonstration projects which identify issues and opportunities associated with costs and benefits, design and engineering practices, installation and maintenance requirements.  This approach promises to significantly reduce the consumption of potable water in buildings, reduce discharge to municipal waste water systems, and save on municipal energy by reducing the amount of potable water treated at municipal facilities. The recognition of the connection between water management and energy conservation is emerging as a new opportunity in integrated management systems.

Here’s more:
