6,493 sq. ft Greenroofs & 2,207 sq. ft Greenwalls

OrchardCentralMall1

Project Description & Details

Orchard Central Mall, situated at the junction of Orchard and Killiney Roads, is Singapore’s tallest and first vertical pure-retail mall, overcoming land area limitations with 11 storeys above ground and 2 basement levels. It boasts multiple outdoor viewing areas with a commanding view of Orchard Road, including three outdoor “green” balconies appealing to alfresco food & beverage outlets. The air-conditioned shopping street discovery walk and the rooftop garden are both accessible to the public 24 hours a day.

The rooftop garden, designed by acclaimed Japanese interior designer, Takashi Sugimato, features 3 large living walls and balcony rail on the 11th floor and 2 lower green walls on the 12th floor roof terrace. The landscape roof system, including the sub-soil drainage for the landscape roof garden and planter boxes, uses the VersiCell sub-soil drainage cells and the greenwalls consist of Vertical Greening Modules (VGM), both by Elmich. Orchard Central Mall is a winner of the Singapore Institute of Architects and National Parks Board’s Skyrise Greenery Awards in 2009.

BacktoEden-ArtPrize1

Project Description & Details

ArtPrize® is a radically open, independently organized annual international art competition with an unprecedented $200,000 top prize decided entirely by public vote. For 19 days, three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, become an open playing field where anyone can find a voice in the conversation about what is art and why it matters.

Back to Eden” is a living entry that ties the bonds between art, architecture and nature. Designed by Dave MacKenzie, the “Back to Eden” project is a living painting, with plants as the paint and the LiveWall growing system as the canvas. The various colors and textures are tied together with a tendril of purple vining through the 11′ x 130′ canvas. It is intended to be a colorful, beautiful, thought provoking tribute to living-architecture visionaries like William McDonough, John Todd, and Malcolm Wells.

How to Vote for “Back to Eden”: VOTING code is: 54712. Only people who register via phone app within the ArtPrize area or register at one of the hubs in downtown Grand Rapids can vote (so you actually have to be there to help determine the winner). Find out more here.

Greenroof Project of the Week for August 26, 2013: Environment Park (EnviPark)

Turin, Italy
215,278 sf. Greenroof

EnviPark1

Project Description & Details

A former brownfield site of heavy industry, Environment ParkParco Scientifico Tecnologico per l’Ambiente – or simply EnviPark, is an eco-efficient research and innovation center in Turin. As a whole, Environment Park covers an area of about 30.000 m2 consisting of laboratories, offices, service centers, and residential areas. Construction and redevelopment began in 1996 to 1999 with site remediation, reconstruction of the landscape, ecological renewal of water systems, and construction of a residential and industrial sector.

The designers of Environment Park daylighted the Dora River, which had straddled the area but had been paved over with a concrete coping slab to accommodate a Fiat factory, among others. Now the Dora flows through the serene sprawling greenspace, which also boasts wide expanses of both flat and pitched green roofs; it is considered the largest green roof in Italy. The entire roof area of ca. 20.000 m2 was greened by ZinCo. The ZinCo System “Pitched Green Roof” was installed on the steeper roof areas (ca. 5.000 m2).

Greenroof Project of the Week for August 19, 2013: Northern Kentucky University Griffin Hall

Greenroofs.com Project of the Week: 8/19/13

Northern Kentucky University Griffin Hall
Cold Springs, KY, USA
8,100 sf. Greenroof

NKU1

Project Description & Details

Northern Kentucky University’s Griffin Hall houses the College of Informatics, a discipline that merges three different departments: Business Informatics, Communication and Computer Science. Once certification is officially received from the United States Green Building Council, Griffin Hall will represent NKU’s first LEED-certified building with LEED Silver.

Among many other features, NKU also installed a green roof above the Informatics Commons space and the bank of four classrooms closest to the Student Union, covering approximately 23% of the total building roof area. Designed by Vivian Llambi and Associates and installed by Tecta America Zero Company and Green City Resources, the green roof’s bold elliptical lines, which are embodied by lightweight gravel vegetation-free zones contained by aluminum edging, echo the elliptical motif of the dynamic architecture of the building and the pedestrian space of the new West Oval below. A Sika Sarnafil membrane was used and rooflite® provided the 8″ deep growing media and pathways with lightweight aggregate.
