Mt Difficulty Winery Wine Barrel Store
Bannockburn, Central Otago, New Zealand
9,688 sq. ft Greenroof

MtDifficultyWinery1

 Project Description & Details

New Zealand’s Central Otago Pinot Noir is a world renown drop of red and Mt Difficulty Wines are sure to feature right up there in many a decent wine list. Due to the increasing popularity of their wine, Mt Difficulty had to scale up their boutique winery to cope with the demand. Designed as a low energy input winery, Mt Difficulty Winery vineyards are managed in a way that reflects their commitment to be as gentle with the environment as possible.

The brief for the new barrel store was to create a temperature controlled and environmentally conscious space that would fit into the surrounding Central Otago landscape. The resulting building is an earth toned exposed aggregate pre-cast panel construction buried back into the hillside with a vegetated living roof by LiveRoof covering the entire 900m2 roof footprint. Stormwater360 developed and installed a palette of grasses suited to the lightweight pumice based growing medium and mixed in locally sourced thyme for aromatics and sedum for color. The roof can be viewed looking down from the Mt Difficulty restaurant and tasting room while enjoying a glass your favorite wine.

Project Description & Details

Formerly owned by Washington Mutual Bank, the Russell Investments Center tower boasts forty-two stories of Class A+ office space plus sweeping, unparalleled views of Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains, Mount Rainier, the Space Needle and downtown Seattle from the 17th floor garden roof from American Hydrotech.

Accessible to all building tenants, the vital social and event space was designed by PFS Studio to integrate elements that relay the story about the center, its local origins and the community it serves. Almost two-thirds of the landscaped deck is planted with predominantly drought-tolerant and native plants. The project presented a rare opportunity to reference the varied and unique landscapes of Washington State, from its coastal beaches to the Olympic and Cascade ranges and the interior plateau. Hanover Architectural Products Headquarters
Hanover, PA, USA

6,164 sq. ft Greenroof

HanoverArchitecturalProductsHQ1

Project Description & Details

Perched atop Hanover® Architectural Product’s one-story warehouse, the company’s green roof provides clients, potential partners, employees, and their families with a vibrant outdoor space. Visitors access the retrofit project from the adjacent corporate headquarters building, and can view the outdoor space while working through conference room and office windows.

Roofmeadow designed the showcase green roof for the industry leader in architectural pavers using these assemblies: Type III (4-8” of media), and Types II (6-8” of media; planters with 8” of media; and tree pits with 26” of media). The main design objective was to integrate the client’s off the shelf concrete architectural products into the roofscape in unsuspecting ways. The carefully-selected plant palette amplifies visitors’ sensory experience: wind blowing through ornamental grasses creates a calming auditory backdrop; trees provide a cool microclimate for those relaxing on the Shade Grove’s seatwalls; scents of Clethra and Magnolia whiff through the space; succulent groundcovers provide bursts of color throughout the seasons.

Williams Engineering Building
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

7,500 sq. ft Greenroof

WilliamsEngineering1

Project Description & Details

Williams Engineering is a company that has emphasized sustainability from its start. Overlooking Edmonton’s river valley, its headquarters also boasts a healthy and sustainable green roof system – a rare green roof success story in the harsh climate of Northern Alberta. Designed as part of ongoing research through the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), the retrofit project aims to test which plants will be most resilient in Edmonton’s dry and windy rooftop environments.

Structural limitations of the existing roof resulted in varying growth media depths, with 3-4” areas in the centre and 6-8” areas along the edges of the roof. Bioroof prescribed two colorful native urban meadow mixes. Selected species include golden aster, prairie cinquefoil, blue flax, coreopsis, black-eyed Susans, low golden rod, and various native grasses and fescues. Bioroof’s Eco-System utilized locally sourced ingredients to create their Eco-Blend growth media. The retrofit also included thirteen 2’ x 8’ research test plots which were designed by NAIT to test growth media at depths of 3” (75 mm), 4” (100 mm), and 6” (150 mm).
