Greenroofs.com Project Week August 14 2017 Millennium Park Chicago

When Millennium Park opened on July 16, 2004, it transformed an industrial wasteland into Chicago’s cutting-edge showplace – the centerpiece is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, a bandshell designed by Frank Gehry. Today, it is Chicago’s second-largest tourist attraction – and the City marked its 10th anniversary throughout the summer of 2014. The Millennium Park 10th Anniversary Summer Celebration featured dozens of free events and exhibitions including new monumental sculptures by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, designer of Crown Fountain; indie rock, electronica, jazz, classical and world music; films, simulcasts and documentaries shown on an outdoor, 40-foot LED screen; family activities; workouts and more. Due to the size, scope, and multi-phase approach, several companies provided waterproofing, including: Barrett CompanyAmerican Hydrotech, Tremco, and Henry.

Project Description & Details

Seeking to upgrade amenities and provide Chicago Bulls players a more conveniently located practice facility, and with the recent expansion of the Bulls’ partnership with Advocate Health Care, the Advocate Center was constructed in September 2014. The $25 million practice facility and front-office headquarters is located on Madison Avenue, across the street from the United Center, the team’s home court since 1994. As both organizations share a passion for philanthropy, a significant component of the expanded partnership will be a focus on improving the community and helping those in need.

Designed by 360 Architecture (now HOK), the new 60,000 square foot Advocate Center, considered a “basketball palace” by some league officials, features state of the art weight training, other amenities for athletes, and a beautiful American Hydrotech green roof terrace – all while delivering eye-catching architecture and further development of the city’s gentrifying West Loop Corridor. The second floor of the Advocate Center features an 11,300 square foot green roof, boasting American Hydrotech Garden Roof® Assembly (partially planted with Sempergreen pre-vegetated Sedum mats) and Ultimate Assembly® technology. More than 1,800 square feet of Hanover Architectural pavers and regional media were used to deliver sustainable benefits and on the spacious amenity deck. The Advocate Center is part of more than $400 million in public and private investment in Chicago’s Near West Side and promises to provide improved synergies for the team and further integrate them into the heart of the downtown community.

Project Description & Details

When considering a deck, green roof, or a combination of both on their Logan Square neighborhood home, the homeowners decided on a green roof as the best way to take advantage of this otherwise extremely hot, cold, or rainy space typical of the climate in the Chicago area. Plus, they say, the 8-inch-deep Omni Ecosystems™ built-in-place green roof is extremely pleasant to look at from the second-floor living room and kitchen and third-floor bedrooms of their home.

The green roof was built layer by layer from root barrier to capillary fabrics, followed by drainage elements and automatic irrigation, capped with ultra-lightweight Omni Ecosystems Infinity Growing Media™, and planted with perennial starts and seeded with Omni Ecosystems Butterfly Mix. At a mere 36 pounds per square foot for its maximum saturated weight, this green roof yields a remarkable flowering meadow and food crops. Retaining an average of 22 inches of rainfall annually, plantings such as black-eyed Susans, coreopsis, asters, tomatoes, strawberries, lettuce, and kale among many others can be found throughout the growing season.

Home to many insects, including bees and butterflies, and many birds, the Logan Square Residence is the recipient of the 2014 Small-Scale Residential Award of Excellence from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.
