IGRA Green Roof News 2/2015 Main Focus: Urban Green Roof Policies

August 11, 2015 at 1:27 pm

Are you on the eNewsletter list of IGRA – the International Green Roof Association?  If not, you’re missing a great IGRA journal with their recently published IGRA Green Roof News 2/2015… while the 43-page issue is full of informative articles and case studies, its main focus is on Urban Green Roof Policies:

As you may already know, the International Green Roof Association “offers the platform for the worldwide promotion and dissemination of ecological Green Roof ideas.”

Read a little about this very instructive issue from our IGRA colleague, Sabine Frueh:

“It’s summer in the cities of the northern hemisphere. A wonderful time but the immense volume of concrete, steel, and asphalt absorbs and releases radiant heat, which can raise and maintain summer temperatures at unbearable levels. Cities can be ten to twenty degrees warmer than similarly situated rural areas and the extreme heat threatens the health of individuals. Plants cool the air by transpiration and are like mini air conditioners in summer, whether they are growing on the ground or on the rooftop.

Cities such as Paris and Rotterdam have long recognized that vegetation on roofs is offering a high potential for the improvement of the urban climate and the reduction of the “urban heat island effect.” Green Roof Policies play a very important role for their sustainable urban planning.

If you’re a city dweller, you might be comfort to know that there is already an international information exchange in this field existing: The International Green Roof City Network is a platform to facilitate the application of Green Roofs Policies within a city. Read more about the Green Roof Policy Toolkit and innovative projects from Denmark, Belgium, Portugal, South Africa, USA and Germany in the IGRA Green Roof News Journal.” ~ Sabine Frueh, Co-Editor & Public Relations, IGRA International Green Roof Association

Also very interesting is the “Interview with Amy Chomowicz (Green Roof Manager, City of Portland, OR) and Wolfgang Ansel (Director, IGRA)” – two of our favorite people!

IGRA had asked me to contribute a piece for this issue about our recently completed Virtual Summit 2015, so you’ll also find an article from me on page 39 entitled “2015 Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit: For the 3rd time, Greenroofs.com Shines a Virtual Spotlight on the Greenroof & Greenwall Industry, Market, & Community.”

I also plan to publish an expanded version of this article very soon here on Greenroofs.com, so look for that, too!

Download the IGRA Guidelines for Green Roofs “Bridging Trades – Safe Section Changeover: Roofing Technology – Vegetation Technology”

January 28, 2015 at 2:36 pm

Our colleagues over at IGRA – the International Green Roof Association – have just released their free downloadable 36-page PDF entitled IGRA Guidelines for Green Roofs “Bridging Trades – Safe Section Changeover: Roofing Technology – Vegetation Technology.”

Editors Roland Appl, Wolfgang Ansel, and Sabine Frueh of IGRA say even the best laid greenroof plans can go wrong if the underlying roof is not prepared to meet demands.  This issue lead IGRA to develop the new guidelines, “Bridging Trades – Safe Section Changeover: Roofing Technology – Vegetation Technology”:

“The content of the IGRA Guidelines is made up of two main modules:

– A checklist that provides a clear and concise overview of current examination criteria for the roof and vegetation technology interface.
– A commentary volume that provides further explanations and graphic material of all technical terms and questions in the checklist.

The guideline is not only designed for Green Roof installers and roofers. It is also designed for architects, planners, and developers who can take advantage of the practical and legal references.” ~ IGRA

At the interface of roofing and vegetation technology, don’t miss reading this thoughtful and extremely informative greenroof resource!  The online version of the brochure is available as a free download, just visit www.greenroofworld.com/EN/press.html.

If you have any comments, please send them to the publisher, IGRA at info@igra-world.com or visit www.igra-world.com.

Watch “Relaunch – Hamburg’s New Green Roof Strategy” by Wolfgang Ansel from Our Virtual Summit 2013

January 20, 2015 at 3:15 pm

In anticipation of Greenroofs.com‘s spectacular 2015 Virtual Summit on April 6 through May 31 – and in order to familiarize you with the event – we are now making the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 videos publicly available on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube to all free of charge.

Today we have the pleasure to air “Relaunch – Hamburg’s New Green Roof Strategy” by Wolfgang Ansel, Director of the International Green Roof Association (IGRA).

Wolfgang tells us that Hamburg was one of the green roof pioneer cities in Germany in the 1980’s. However, in the following decades the approaches were not implemented consistently.  Against the background of climate change adaptation, the multiple benefits of green roofs are now receiving more attention.  IGRA is working in close cooperation with the city of Hamburg and the Hafencity University Hamburg to develop a green roof strategy for Germany’s second largest city.

He will explain the municipal strategy and the various activities that have been undertaken in the last years (seminars, workshops, publications, scientific investigations) to support this process. The culmination of the activities was the organisation of the 3rd International Green Roof Congress in Hamburg in 2013.

Here’s more:

“Nürtingen, Germany. Wolfgang Ansel is a biologist and the Director of the International Green Roof Association (IGRA). IGRA’s targets include the worldwide promotion of the ecological green roof idea, an international knowledge transfer in the field of green roofs and the stimulation of international standards for good practices and reliable green roof technology. Wolfgang studied at the University of Hohenheim, Germany.

Wolfgang Ansel is co-author of different green roof books. During the last years, he was an invited speaker at congresses in Europe, North America and Asia. One of his main areas of work is implementing green roof policies and guidelines on an international level. ~ VS2013

Make sure to read these two related Guest Feature Articles by Wolfgang on Greenroofs.com: International Green Roof Congress 2013 Hamburg – The Future of Urban Roofs from June 2013 and the 3rd International Green Roof Congress – Hamburg Will Be the Showcase for Green Roofs in 2013 from March 2013.

Look forward to his upcoming article “Explore the Nature on Rooftops – 4th International Green Roof Congress (20 – 21 April 2015) Istanbul/Turkey” next week!
