Watch “Relaunch – Hamburg’s New Green Roof Strategy” by Wolfgang Ansel from Our Virtual Summit 2013

January 20, 2015 at 3:15 pm

In anticipation of Greenroofs.com‘s spectacular 2015 Virtual Summit on April 6 through May 31 – and in order to familiarize you with the event – we are now making the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 videos publicly available on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube to all free of charge.

Today we have the pleasure to air “Relaunch – Hamburg’s New Green Roof Strategy” by Wolfgang Ansel, Director of the International Green Roof Association (IGRA).

Wolfgang tells us that Hamburg was one of the green roof pioneer cities in Germany in the 1980’s. However, in the following decades the approaches were not implemented consistently.  Against the background of climate change adaptation, the multiple benefits of green roofs are now receiving more attention.  IGRA is working in close cooperation with the city of Hamburg and the Hafencity University Hamburg to develop a green roof strategy for Germany’s second largest city.

He will explain the municipal strategy and the various activities that have been undertaken in the last years (seminars, workshops, publications, scientific investigations) to support this process. The culmination of the activities was the organisation of the 3rd International Green Roof Congress in Hamburg in 2013.

20-21 April, 2015: SAVE THE DATE for the 4th International Green Roof Congress in Istanbul, Turkey!

Where is there room for nature in towns?  This is a question that is increasingly being asked by building experts around the world who are faced with the challenges of urban densification.

Under the motto “Explore nature on rooftops,” successful solutions and practical green roof technology will be presented, discussed and taught at the upcoming 4th International Green Roof Congress in Istanbul on 20-21 April, 2015.  The latest achievements in science and technology will also be presented.

The congress, supported by the International Green Roof Association (IGRA), will be held at the Zorlu Center’s new Raffles Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey.

Join us for a top-level program with lectures and interactive practical workshops at the Congress venue Zorlu Center with its 72.000 m² of green areas on different levels.

Istanbul has been experiencing a rapid increase in population due to migration.  This means a very fast urban transformation process is taking place in the Mediterranean metropolis straddling two continents.  One of the main challenges of Istanbul’s green policy is increasing the number of green areas within the whole city.

Desired economic growth and rising land prices on the one hand, and the need for green infrastructure for urban quality of living and sustainable urban development on the other hand, have drawn attention to the city’s rooftops.

Investors have long since recognized that rooftop multi-use not only increases the value of a building, but also improves its attractiveness for leasing.  Because no additional land costs are involved, roof gardens are no more expensive than ground level gardens.

We look forward to seeing you at the 4th International Green Roof Congress in Istanbul!
