Watch “Upping the Urban Green. What is the Actual and Potential Role of Ecology in our Cities?” by Dr. Mark Simmons and Christine Thuring from Our Virtual Summit 2013

February 13, 2015 at 12:23 pm

In anticipation of Greenroofs.com‘s spectacular 2015 Virtual Summit on April 6 through May 31 – and in order to familiarize you with the event – we are now making the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 videos publicly available on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube to all free of charge.

Today we have the pleasure to air “Upping the Urban Green.  What is the Actual and Potential Role of Ecology in our Cities?” by Mark Simmons, PhD from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas and Christine Thuring (Chlorophyllocity) from the University of Sheffield.

Christine, as you know, has been a long time contributor to Greenroofs.com – review my recent post Watch “Vegetation Development on Extensive Green Roofs Over Time” by Christine Thuring from Our Virtual Summit 2013.  And, Christine and Mark also participated in our inaugural “Inspiration Nook” with this short video.

Even if you were not presenting, as an attendee you could submit your under 3 minute (non-overtly commercial) videos of research, ideas, projects, poster boards, thought leadership, etc., which were followed by your own live Discussion Chat.

This series is focused around sparking conversation, ideas, dialogue and connections around a specific greenroof/wall-related topic – a mosaic of bright ideas for a greener world.

VS2013-SimmonsThuringInspirationNook

Mark and Christine proposed, “Now that we are an urban species, we are ever more compelled to create and regenerate urban ecological function to maintain global sustainability, human health and our relationship to the natural world.  But is ecological function really being prioritized and implemented in our cities?  Are methods and technologies like green roofs, living walls, water sensitive designs and natural green space being as widely used as they could be?  If not, what’s holding it up?

“This short video gives a brief introduction to urban ecology and presents a case for collaborative ecological urban design towards an optimistic future for our cities and planet.” In order to gauge how opinions vary by culture and discipline, participants were invited to participate in a short 10 question, global online survey which sought to answer how can we do better as professionals.

Watch “A Tale of Two Hydroponic Living Wall Systems from Canada and Spain” by Dr. Alan Darlington and Nacho Solano from Our Virtual Summit 2013

February 4, 2015 at 2:00 pm

In anticipation of Greenroofs.com‘s spectacular 2015 Virtual Summit on April 6 through May 31 – and in order to familiarize you with the event – we are now making the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 videos publicly available on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube to all free of charge.

Today we have the pleasure to air “A Tale of Two Hydroponic Living Wall Systems from Canada and Spain” by Dr. Alan Darlington of NEDLAW Living Walls and Ignacio (Nacho) Solano of Paisajismo Urbano.

VS2013AlanDarlington-Drexel

Alan Darlington will present “Indoor Air Biofilters.” The indoor air biofilter is an interior plantscape that can effectively remove common indoor contaminants and improves the living environment. It represents the hybridization of science, art and engineering to deal with real problems of indoor air quality in an aesthetic and sustainable manner. The NEDLAW Living Wall™ is the result of close to 20 years of university research. At first glance, the biofilter appears as a vertical hydroponic green wall containing a wide range of foliage plants specifically selected for each site.

However, the plant wall is actually an integrated part of the air handling system for the building. Air is actively forced through the wall of plants and highly specialized biological components actively degrade pollutants such formaldehyde and benzene in the air into their benign constituents of water and carbon dioxide. The clean air is then distributed throughout the building, greatly improving the building performance. This presentation will outline the science and engineering behind the biofilters and their impact on the indoor space as well as issues related to design and integration into the built environment.

VS2013NachoSolano-Gaia-B3

Nacho Solano will share the history of Paisajismo Urbano in Spanish with English subtitles and how the love of plants has been transformed into one of the leading companies in our sector worldwide. Over 14 years of work have resulted in the seamless integration between urban spaces and nature, received due to a combination of biology, botany, engineering, design and a patented formula which combines fungi and bacteria, ensuring complete success on site. Come and discover his interviews with rare footage and follow this firm which is synonymous with experience and expertise in the world of advanced vertical gardening.

NachoSolanoandAlanDarlingtonS. Breslau, Canada. Dr. Alan Darlington is Principal of NEDLAW Living Walls. Alan was awarded his PhD investigating the interaction between plants and their physical environment from the University of Guelph. Alan has received a number of awards for academic and entrepreneurial accomplishments and is the ‘inventor’ of a number of patents integral to the application of plant based biofilters to the indoor space which has been his area of interest since 1994. Since 2004, his companies have installed close to 200 biofilters across North America. In 2005, he was named by Outdoor Magazine as one of the 25 top true believers in the environmental movement for his work with plant biofilters.

Alan is also part of the “Environmental Healing through Phytoremediation – Chapter 1” Panel Session, to be shown at a later date.

January 30, 2015 at 11:21 am

In anticipation of Greenroofs.com‘s spectacular 2015 Virtual Summit on April 6 through May 31 – and in order to familiarize you with the event – we are now making the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 videos publicly available on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube to all free of charge.

Today we have the pleasure to air “Coastal Green Roof Design and Native Plants” by Kevin Songer, green roof designer for MetroVerde, blogger with Living Green Roofs, and Greenroofs.com contributing editor – the Tropical Green Roof Editor.  We’ve known Kevin for several years now as he serves as tropical, coastal and hurricane green roof expert for MetroVerde, a Florida based vertical green design company.  And we were very happy that he served on Greenroofs.com’s “Wind. Water. Heat. Grow. Greenroofs.” Panel Session with Dr. Bill Retzlaff, David Aponte, and Joe Webb during the inaugural 2011 Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit.

VS2013-KevinSonger-BeachPlant

In this video, Kevin speaks about his years of experience on living roofs.  Designing green roofs for coastal areas presents many challenges.  Actual case studies, including a recent hospital green roof design on Bermuda will be discussed.  This video examines issues and solutions to using native plants for salt and wind impacted shoreline rooftop gardens.
