Greenroofs.com Project of the Week: April 16, 2018

The ubiquitous above-ground parking garage building typology is not usually known for design innovation.  Imagine brightening up their monotonous facades with living plant material.

Instead of seeing the usual boring type of parking structure, the citizens of Bloomington, Indiana are greeted daily with bright and cheerful annuals in a vertical row of five window openings!  In this case, colorful greenwalls give the appearance of large window boxes, and the city commissioners receive tons of compliments.  And the fact that the modular system components are high-impact, UV-resistant and that the county can replant very easily makes for a great design option.

Read the April 15, 2018 guest feature Living Wall Blooms on Bloomington Parking Garage by Amber Ponce and David Aquilina for more info on this project.

Mini Description & Details

Designed by Axis Architecture + Interiors, the new 240-parking space Monroe County Parking Garage in Bloomington, Indiana provides parking for county employees and the general public to relieve parking congestion.  But rather than appearing bland or austere, a LiveWall greenwall installation adds a living element of green design to the six-story brick and concrete building.

The low maintenance living wall system fills five of the parking structure’s window openings with a variety of plants that bloom in shades of yellow, red, pink, purple, and green.  The architects said the idea was to break up the otherwise stark exterior of parking structure with an interesting and visually appealing element.

Because the system for this application was not mounted on a solid wall surface, the parking garage living wall had to be installed across window openings within the structure’s wall.  ProCLAD designed and installed a framework within the 8 feet long by 6 feet tall window openings with 4-inch by 4-inch by 1/4-inch tube steel.

They bolted the LiveWall system’s horizontal aluminum rails to the tube steel frames.  Each of the five sections of green wall has six rows of LiveWall modular planter boxes, which slide into the rails.  Its structural design lent itself to a secure installation within the garage windows in a way that allows for easy access from behind the green wall on the inside the garage.

The greenwall has a total of 180 plants in a variety of seven annuals including yellow, red and purple coleus, plus Silver Falls, red and pink begonias, and sweet potato vines.

Greenroofs.com Project of the Week: April 2, 2018

Known for its credo “City in the Garden,” beautiful Singapore is an island nation where land is at a premium.  We’ve had the privilege to visit twice, in 2010 and 2015, and continue to be amazed at the sheer number of living roofs and walls on a wide variety of building typologies.

Since the great majority of Singaporeans live in highrises, the city-state’s public housing authority has greened as many multi-family structures as possible.  New ones are now designed with greenroofs, and when feasible, older facilities are refurbished with lightweight systems.

Greenroofs.com Project Week HDB BLK 667B Singapore

Mini Description & Details

Singapore has been actively greening its urban landscape for many years with sky gardens, living walls, and world-class gardens.  The Housing & Development Board (or HDB) is Singapore’s public housing authority and today, more than 80% of the population is living in HDB’s 1 million plus flats in 23 towns across the island.

Located in the northeast region of Singapore, Punggol was developed to be its first eco-town.

Greenroofs.com Project Week HDB BLK 667B Singapore

The HDB BLK 667B is a retrofit of three highrise residential blocks at the Punggol housing estate whose rooftop equipment and piping had been covered by a “second” roof of sorts.  Made of large concrete tiles, they were laid in shingled fashion, and the Town Council wanted to cover them with greenery to improve visual appeal and reduce interior temperature.

Because the only access to the 23rd floor rooftop was up one staircase from the elevator, plus the equipment obstacles, the project required a system that was light and clean to transport and easy and quick to install, with minimal maintenance in the long term.

Designed and installed by Xero Flor Singapore, the mineral wool-based XF309 Light buildup now covers the large concrete shingles.  Perfect for retrofits, the roll format soil-less system weighs only 33 kg/m2 (or 6.6 psf) when fully saturated, which is one of the lightest weight systems on the market.

The pre-vegetated Xeroflor mats contain small low-profile tropical succulents including Sedum sarmentosum, three types of Portulaca, and Plectranthus prostratus.  Pre-grown in local nurseries to a minimum vegetation coverage of 80%, they provide an instant green effect with seasonal visual interests.  Shade cloth was used to cover the entire green roof initially to allow the plants to root firmly into the water retention fleece underneath.

The colorful lightweight Xeroflor/ Low & Bonar green roofs add greenery, lower the interior temperature, reduce reflective glare and create a pleasant view for the neighboring blocks.

The availability of fresh, local produce is so important in our cities, and not often found farm-to-table.  But urban agriculture on greenroofs makes rooftop farm-to-table easily accessible!  With AgLanta next week on our minds, we’re once again showcasing the success of the FOOD ROOF Farm in St. Louis by Urban Harvest STL.

We were thrilled to have also featured this wonderful project in our 2017 Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit with the video “FOOD ROOF Farm: Grow Food, Grow Community” from the founder and farm manager, Mary E. Ostafi.  As the Executive Director of Urban Harvest STL, Mary spoke on how they are fostering food system change in their community.

Mini Description & Details

Urban Harvest STL, a St. Louis nonprofit, empowers communities to cultivate equitable access to healthy, sustainably grown food and enhance biodiversity in cities.  After years of gardening on the ground, the Urban Harvest STL founders combined their background in architecture with HOK with their experience in urban agriculture to design and build St Louis’s first rooftop farm, the FOOD ROOF Farm.

Community engagement drove the design and the project illustrates various rooftop farming growing techniques including the intensive greenroof, hydroponic towers, raised beds, modular planters and greenhouse and tracks best practices for growing each crop efficiently.

Built in 2015, the 8,500 square foot FOOD ROOF Farm is located in the heart of downtown St Louis above a two-story storage facility utilizing a Sika Sarnafil PVC waterproofing membrane, which doubles as a root barrier; capillary, protective & filter fleece and drainage boards from Optigrün international AG / Optigreen; and pavers from Bison Innovative Products.  With additional consulting and design services from Hanging Gardens, the hybrid intensive greenroof system and farm was built in conjunction with volunteers along with Urban Harvest STL.

Greenroofs.com Project Week Food Roof Farm St Louis

Over 250 varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers are grown annually and more than 4,000 pounds of organic food was produced in 2017.  The majority is donated to people who need it the most in the community.

Other notable farm features include a Milkweed for Monarchs pollinator garden and keeping over 40,000 honeybees and 5 chickens.

More

The community hub space hosts over 20 educational workshops and activities each year.  And, the robust green roof infrastructure captures up to 17,000 gallons of stormwater per storm event, which equates to over 1,819,000 gallons annually.  Rainwater captured is utilized for plant growth, reducing irrigation needs by up to 50%.

Urban Harvest STL set out to not only create a social impact but also create an ecological return as well; they are increasing biodiversity gains and pollinator health on their rooftop.  The FOOD ROOF Farm is growing healthy food and a community of healthy people.

Following our wonderful experience attending the 5th International Green Roof Congress in Kuwait City last month, we are highlighting one of the projects we visited afterwards when we traveled to Dubai: the beautiful Dubai Opera and its new Opera Garden.

Installed in July 2017, the Dubai Opera Garden has center stage to the Burj Lake and the fabulous Dubai Music Fountains presented by the stunning Burj Khalifa, currently the world’s highest building.

Greenroofs.com Project Week Dubai Opera Garden Green Roof Greenwalls

Mini Description & Details

Situated in what is considered ‘the most prestigious square kilometre in the world’, the spectacular Dubai Opera is framed by the Burj Khalifa, lakes, fountains, and an array of mixed-use development.  Shaped like a dhow, a traditional wooden sailing vessel used in Arabian Gulf waters, the Dubai Opera was designed by ATKINS.

The 3,000 square meter Dubai Opera Garden green roof was installed by AGCCIC over a large utility building located directly in front after two years of research by Knauf Insulation. Many festivities are held here at the publicly accessible green roof park and cultural space.

Challenges included weight restraints of the roof structure, the hot and dry environment, and high water consumption for keeping the roof green.

Greenroofs.com Project Week Dubai Opera Garden Green Roof Greenwalls

Knauf Insulation provided a lightweight system created by using only a 10 centimeter growing media profile using one layer of Urbanscape Green Roll mineral growing media (known as Hydro Blanket in the US) and a layer of local sweet soil on top.

Two types of semi-intensive green roofs include the large, open green park space planted with native Paspalum Grass and a smaller slightly elevated roof for plant testing with Sesuvium and others.  The system weight was reduced by 70% and irrigation needs were lowered up to 40% as compared to the standard green roof solution in Dubai.

More

Steps provide entry to the new green roof with access ramps on the side, dramatically lighted at night. A series of colorful modular greenwalls cover two sides to soften the structure.

Surrounded by a set of curvaceous vegetated terraces, a variety of different climate-adapted shrubs were planted such as Agave and Bougainvillea. The open space provides a beautiful elevated view of the world famous Dubai Music Fountains and colorful light show put on several times nightly.

Dubai Opera is a definitive international destination for performing arts, and its Opera Garden provides a needed and spacious public greenspace amenity to visitors to the world-class entertainment venue.
