Greenroof Project of the Week for February 4, 2013: Jacob K. Javits Convention Center

February 6, 2013 at 11:57 am

Greenroofs.com  Project of the Week: 2/4/13

Jacob K. Javits Convention Center
New York, NY, USA

Project Description & Details

With 840,000 gross square feet of exhibit space, the Javits Convention Center is New York City’s largest venue for conventions, trade shows and special events. Its major renovation project includes a new roof, re-doing the building’s signature curtain wall with high-performance glass, upgrades to the mechanical and electrical systems, and interior reconfigurations to enhance the visitor experience as well as boost operational efficiency. Early on, plans to incorporate a lightweight green roof was the preferred alternative to concrete pavers because of its contribution to the goal of earning LEED ® Silver status.

According to designers FXFOWLE Architects and Epstein Global, a green roof was also desirable from a design perspective because taller buildings are on the drawing boards for the area. The lightweight vegetative mats for the Javits green roof include 14 different varieties of Sedum which promote greater diversity and sustainability. The vegetative mats are being grown for a full 9-12 months at a farm in upstate New York and will thereby be adapted to the regional climate. Clayton Rugh, Ph.D., General Manager and Technical Director, Xero Flor America, manufacturer of the green roof system selected for the Javits, has calculated that the green roof will prevent approximately 6.8 million gallons of run-off per year. At present, the green roof installation is one-third complete.

Don’t miss Dr. Clayton Rugh at the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013!  Join him on the “Environmental Healing through Phytoremediation – Chapter One” Panel with Patrick Carey (Moderator), Dr. Alan Darlington and Dr. Paul Mankiewicz on Wednesday February 13 at 3:00 pm EST, Q & A at 4:00.

Send Us Your Under 3-Minute Video for the Inspiration Nook!

January 30, 2013 at 4:29 pm

What is the “Inspiration Nook?”

Just about all of us – designers, manufacturers, researchers, students, etc., – have something on our mind that we’d like to share with our greenroof and greenwall community, right?  Well, as much as we’d love to have a hundred speakers at our Virtual Summits, it’s just impossible.

But, as an attendee of the  Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013  you can submit and schedule your <3 minute (non-overtly commercial) videos of research, ideas, projects, poster boards, thought leadership, etc., here in the “Inspiration Nook” which will be followed by your own scheduled live Discussion Chat.

Based on under 3-minute videos, this series is focused around sparking conversation, ideas, dialogue and connections around a specific greenroof/wall-related topic – a mosaic of bright ideas for a greener world.  Yes, they have to be under 3 minutes to qualify!

Quality Over Quantity

We’ve all heard of the “Elevator Pitch” – why not  show your succinct pitch in a < 3-minute video!  Examples:

– As a researcher or student you may have recently spent a lot time (and money) creating a poster board for a conference or class – share it with like-minded people and get their input.

– You have a new book coming out (yes, a little commercial, but informational as well) – tell our audience about it and then be on board to answer audience questions.

– Your firm is working on (or finished) a really cool project that you have short film of – show it and share your experience (cannot be product-oriented, it would need to be project-oriented).

– You have an idea for the public good and would love some constructive feedback from your peers.

Inspiration!

Read about one,  “Upping the Urban Green.  What is the Actual and Potential Role of Ecology in our Cities?“, by Mark Simmons, PhD from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas and Christine Thuring (Chlorophyllocity and one of our contributing editors) from the University of Sheffield.

By the way, it cannot be specifically about a product per se – for that you are welcome to be a part of our wonderful Expo at only $600 for an Exhibitor Booth.

The Inspiration Nook will be housed in its own location within our virtual campus, to identify it as something special!

We will include your short bio and photo on the Speakers page and a subject photo and short description on the Agenda, plus schedule a day and time to show it.  Make sure you’re available afterwards to participate in the live Q & A that follows.
