In anticipation of Greenroofs.com’s spectacular 2015 Virtual Summit on April 6 through May 31 – and in order to familiarize you with the event – we are now making the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 videos publicly available on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube to all free of charge.

Today we have the pleasure to air the Collaborative Video “Profiles of Women Business Leaders Greening the Way” with Barbara Deutsch, Lexie Hain and Marguerite Wells, Vanessa Keitges, and Joy Schmidt.  When I was creating the Agenda for our Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013 I wanted a specific venue to highlight females in our industry and although we have many awesome examples, I believe I chose four great champions to learn from and be inspired by – each in a very different way:

VS2013-ProfilesofWomenLeaders

Hear about the trials, tribulations and personal stories of not only running a woman-led company/organization, but highly succeeding at it from: Barbara Deutsch, FASLA, Executive Director of the Landscape Architecture Foundation; Lexie Hain and Marguerite Wells, Co-Owners of Motherplants Nursery; Vanessa Keitges, President & CEO of Columbia Green Technologies; and Joy Schmidt, CEO of Vitaroofs International.

Here’s more:

Washington, D.C, USA. Barbara Deutsch, FASLA, Executive Director of the Landscape Architecture Foundation presents “Showing Value: Creating Change.” The mission of the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) is to support the preservation, improvement and enhancement of the environment. Barbara has a diverse background in both the not-for-profit and private sector. Before changing careers to become a landscape architect, she was a marketing professional for IBM for ten years, earning two of its most prestigious awards, the Golden Circle, which recognizes the top 5% of marketing representatives in the country. Barbara has since used these valuable business skills to become a leader in the sustainable design movement.

Ithaca, NY, USA. Lexie Hain and Marguerite Wells, Co-Owners of Motherplants Nursery present: “Farmer Girls: The Story of Motherplants.” The evolution of Motherplants as a business has closely tracked the evolution of the US green roof industry as a whole, with changing patterns of plants, products, and market conditions affecting how the business works and what we grow. Some of what we’ve learned is specific to green roofs and walls, some of it inherent to running any business; who’s good to work with, what trends are worth tracking, and sorting good information from bad. We’ll share our philosophy, business trends we’ve seen, and some notable projects along the way.

Portland, OR, USA. Vanessa Keitges, President & CEO of Columbia Green Technologies presents: “Vanessa Keitges: Leading to Make a Difference from the President & CEO of Columbia Green Technologies.” Vanessa has a dynamic 9-year global career reflecting optimal performance in the public and private sector in the area of business development, marketing and sales. She purchased Columbia Green Technologies along with local investors in 2009 and the company is currently experiencing significant growth under her leadership.

Mississauga, Canada. Joy Schmidt, CEO of Vitaroofs International presents: “Aim High, Get Your Hands Dirty and Persevere with Purpose – A Paradigm in Sustainability Entrepreneurship, from Green Roof Pioneer Joy Schmidt” Despite the mounting evidence for change, green leaders continue to face resistance in the marketplace. So, what’s it going to take to win the race to sustainability? As a pioneer of green roofs, Joy Schmidt shares how she overcame not just skepticism but total disinterest to partnering in the development of some of the most celebrated green roof projects in North America today. It’s a wild ride. You’ll shake your head, smile and even laugh. But the reason she shares her story is to inspire today’s green leaders, architects, builders, corporations, government and home owners, with a formula to fortify their passionate pursuit for tangible results.” ~ VS2013

What better way to inaugurate the Virtual Summit 2013 (VS2013) series than by showing you a video with great people and a couple of awesome projects in Sydney, host city of the upcoming (next week!) World Green Infrastructure Congress 2014 held by Green Roofs Australasia and WGIN?  Hosted by Matthew Dillon, president of Green Roofs Australasia, you will be highly entertained and get a glimpse of sustainable design Down Under.

VS2013-MattDillon-CentralParkTowersSydney

Matt Dillon, President of Green Roofs Australasia, takes you on a journey with onsite talks about new urban green sites in Australia, including the current Central Park Towers in Sydney and the Ivy, “a sophisticated urban playground for grown ups.”

Located in the Broadway section of Sydney, the mixed-use Central Park Towers development is designed by French architect Jean Nouvel and French botanist Patrick Blanc – inventor of the vertical garden. The vertical hanging gardens will be the most visible feature. At 150 metres, One Central Park will be his tallest (not largest overall) garden to date, using a variety of species, many native to Australia. His informative video will also include coverage of his interview with Patrick Blanc discussing the progress of One Central Park.

Matt also interviewed Daniel Baffsky of 360° Landscape Architects about the new spectacular Ivy, “a mad burlesque of circus, dance and sensory overload throughout 10 bars, 4 levels & 3 stages” cloaked in greenery. The Ivy is part Brazilian modernism and Hollywoodish Palm Springs its blue roof/green rooftop – a bit of an urban jungle.

Vanessa Keitges, CEO Columbia Green Technologies, Named to President Obama’s Export Council!

September 20, 2013 at 1:02 pm

Wow, congratulations, Vanessa!  What a coup!

VanessaKeitges2

As you can imagine, Columbia Green Technologies, Inc., provider of greenroof systems, is honored by the appointment of Vanessa Keitges to the President’s Export Council, a committee of government and private-sector leaders who advise him on trade and export related issues.

“I am honored and excited to represent the green building industry among these strong business leaders. As CEO of a small business headquartered on the west coast, I believe I bring a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities for exportation of products made in the USA.” ~ Vanessa Keitges, President and CEO of Columbia Green

On Wednesday, September 18, President Obama announced his appointment of the seven new members, including Vanessa, bringing the total up to 26.

Five years after the start of the financial crisis, President Obama believes the U.S.’s economic recovery is well underway although there is more work to do:

“Now, we can still do more when it comes to exports, and thanks in part to new trade deals that I’ve signed as well as obviously really great products and services that you’ve all designed, America now exports more to the rest of the world than ever before.  We’re on track to export even more this year.  Last year, $1 billion in exports supported nearly 50,000 jobs — or 5,000 jobs in the United States.” ~ President Barack Obama on September 19, 2013

“This council provides the President with advice on how to increase trade and grow U.S. exports, and I have no doubt that the new members and their expertise will bolster our efforts to help American business, increase exports and boost our competitiveness abroad.” ~ Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker

Vanessa has a dynamic 10-year global career reflecting optimal performance in the public and private sector in the area of business development, marketing and sales.  She purchased Columbia Green Technologies along with local investors in 2009 and the company is currently experiencing significant growth under her leadership.  From 2005 to 2007, she was Sales Director at Site9 in Portland, Oregon.  Vanessa held various positions at VoteHere Ltd., including European Business Development Manager.  She currently serves on the Oregon Zoo Wildlife Board.  Vanessa received a B.A. in Philosophy from Oregon State University.

It’s no wonder President Obama has selected her to be on his Export Council – the first representative from the State of Oregon to be named!

“Oregon is a trade dependent state where innovative companies grow and thrive, and I am proud to have Vanessa representing Oregon on the President’s Export Council. Columbia Green is a terrific example of how great, home grown ideas can turn into fast growing companies that export innovative products and services all over the world.” ~ Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber
